Dear sisters and colleagues,

This month two important events are happening at international level: the Conference on States Parties to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities happening next week online, and the Gender Equality Forum happening in Paris and online at the end of the month. We are pleased to share that women and girls with disabilities will be represented in both settings.

If you missed it, we are sharing with you the recording of our workshop on using the UN Optional Protocols on women and on disability rights to advence the rights of women and girls with disabilites.

We are also happy to share with you our position paper on violence against women and girls with disablities adopted in May to contribute to the consultations of the European Union on the topic. This is not an exhaustive document. Women and girls with disabilities, and women caring for persons with disabilities, face many forms of violence often unspoken about. You are nonetheless welcome to use our paper, and to contact us if you would like to input our work on ending violence against women in all their diversity.

Finally, we share with you some consultations that may interest you and your network.

In solidarity and sisterhood,

Marine

Europe

We published a position paper on violence against women and girls with disabilities in the European Union

To feed to the consultation on combatting domestic and violence against women organised by the European Commission, we published a position paper on violence against women and girls with disabilities in the European Union

Women and girls with disabilities continue to face multiple and intersectional discrimination in all areas of life, and are more at risk to face violence, abuses and harmful practices. Violence may take place in various settings (including in institutions and segregated schools) and take different forms, including harassment and sexual violence, but also forced abortion and sterilisation, and disability specific violence.

Not only they face violence at a higher rate than women without disabilities, they also face additional barriers in reporting, accessing justice, and have access to victims’ rights support measures and protection orders.

We call on the European Union to:

  • Ratify and implement the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention)
  • Add gender-based violence to the list of EU crimes.
  • Adopt an EU Directive criminalising all forms of male violence against women and girls
  • Set up a coordinating body to end violence against women and girls
  • Ensuring that gender-based violence is addressed within relevant EU policies and strategies
  • Collect data and conducting research
  • Finance and promote training and capacity building of professionals in EU Member States
  • Finance and promote emotional and sexuality education in EU Member States, including through project funding
