Welcome to the February edition of the HudRail Newsletter!
With the January exam period over and our first design review rapidly approaching, we are now increasingly focused on the development of designs for this year’s locomotive. We are also looking forward to visiting the Stapleford Miniature Railway this month, where the Team will get the chance to meet officials, judges and scrutineers, as well as the other competitors! This will be a great chance for the Team to ask any questions that we have, and also to get a better idea of the location and surroundings for the competition this summer.
Working with our existing sponsors; Wixroyd, RS Components, and Dassault Systemes, we have been able to make significant steps towards completion of the designs for the locomotive, and also make some minor improvements to our lab to make working on the locomotive that little bit easier. As always, we would like to extend our thanks to our sponsors for their continued support of the HudRail team.
The Team is currently in pursuit of a sponsor for a new drive system which we hope will provide a good result at the competition this year and form the foundation of a long-lasting platform for future teams to build upon.
We are always on the lookout for new potential sponsors. If you or your organisation is interested in sponsoring the HudRail team this year, please send us an email via the link on the left, or drop us a message on Facebook or Twitter.
Following on from the development of a bogie design last month, a body framework has been determined which will house the larger and key components of the sub-systems. This framework has reduced the package size of the locomotive compared to previous years, reducing the locomotive weight to give the team a more competitive edge in the traction and ride comfort challenges.
The Team also has a minimum specification for the drive system, a concept design for the brakes and suspension and their operation, and some solid foundations for the energy recovery, traction, and control systems. These will all pass through our design review at the end of the month, allowing us to pull all of the ideas together and complete our first concept design for the full locomotive.

January saw the commencement of testing by several of our undergraduate team members, whose individual final year projects are feeding into the designs and functions of this year’s locomotive. This included both on and off track testing of the current locomotive’s braking and cooling abilities, as well as some new concepts, and have aided the team in developing their ideas and designs to deliver their proposals at the design review.
Further testing will continue to take place over the coming months, as we begin construction of this year’s locomotive and work to optimise strengths and iron out any weaknesses which occur.
