Welcome to the second edition of the HudRail Newsletter!
We hope you had an enjoyable festive season, and are as excited about the year ahead as we are at Hudrail! Our undergraduate students are still working hard on all aspects of the locomotive, and the Team has moved into a new lab within the Institute of Railway Research at the University of Huddersfield, with last year’s locomotive taking pride of place on the test track in the lab.
Sponsorship
We have already started working alongside our existing sponsors (Wixroyd, RS Components, and Dassault Systemes) as we develop our locomotive and look to make improvements to our lab to help us carry out our work. As always, we would like to extend our thanks to our sponsors for their continued support of the HudRail team.
We’d also like to extend a special thank you to the team at Georg, who have spent time working with our MEng team to understand the drive system on last year’s locomotive.
The Team is currently in talks with several companies and organisations regarding sponsorship, in various forms ranging from advice and guidance to component provisions and financial backing, and we are always on the lookout for new potential sponsors.

Developments
The Team has developed a solid understanding of the drive system on last year’s locomotive, allowing a new drive system to be designed to work alongside the other sub-systems on the locomotive, including the energy recovery system.
Other sub-systems are currently in the early stages of development, with the BEng team providing regular updates on the progress made. Just before the winter break, the whole team came together for the BEng team to present their work to date and obtain feedback and ideas to take forwards into the design phase of their projects. This has allowed significant leaps to be made, keeping the team’s progress on track.
Most significantly, a bogie design for this year’s locomotive has been developed and is currently undergoing the final design review. This provides a solid foundation from which the rest of our locomotive can be built around, and is a key milestone for us as a team.
Testing
Over the last month, the Team have spent time running last year’s locomotive on the new test track outside the Institute of Railway Research. Although further test work is to be done in order to specifically look at each of the individual sub-systems, these runs taught the Team a great deal about how the locomotive operates and where its strengths and weaknesses lie. Further testing and optimisation will allow us to develop a strong entry for the 2017 competition, so there will be plenty to keep us busy over the coming months!
