Welcome to the March edition of the HudRail Newsletter!
Last month the Team visited Stapleford Miniature Railway, where we met some of the railway’s volunteers and competition judges. We were also given a brief of the challenges and how the competition weekend would be run, followed by a tour of the site, pointing out where each of the challenges will be taking place along the track. This was followed a few weeks later by our first design review of the complete locomotive.

Sponsorship
Wixroyd, RS Components, and Dassault Systemes, are continuing their support for the Team as we work towards the completion of our designs for this year’s locomotive. The support they have offered is providing the Team with a real boost to ensure that we can deliver a competitive locomotive to the Railway Challenge competition in June.
We are always keen to explore potential sponsorship avenues, and have a range of benefits that can be offered in return for your support. If you or your organisation are interested in sponsoring the HudRail team this year, please send the Team an email, or drop us a message on Facebook or Twitter.
Developments
By the middle of February, the Team had design proposals for all sub-systems on the locomotive, combining them together to create the initial concept design. The review assessed every sub-system on the locomotive in great detail, and on the whole was positive.
As a result of the review, a few changes are being made to the concept for this year’s locomotive to improve the design and seek more cost-effective solutions. With these changes currently being implemented to our designs, we hope to have a second review at the end of this month and will be placing orders for required components in the following weeks, with the intention of having a completed locomotive ready for testing approximately two months before the competition.
Testing
Testing by our undergraduate students has provided some useful information for both their individual projects, and also the HudRail team. We now have a clearer understanding about the functions of the sub-systems and their strengths and weaknesses. The Team is currently implementing a second phase of testing to evaluate the effect of the changes made after the design review.
