Welcome to the April edition of the HudRail Newsletter!
March was a busy month for the Team, balancing numerous university assignments with continued progress on the HudRail project. It also saw the Team welcome Jon Hilton, President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, to the Railway Challenge laboratory as part of his fact-finding visit to the University. The full article about Mr Hilton's visit to the University can be found here.

As the competition draws ever nearer and with teaching now completed for the year, strong progress is currently being made in the HudRail laboratory on developing our locomotive to get it ready for the competition. The Easter break also allows the Team plenty of time to work on the locomotive ahead of the exam season starting in May.
Competition Weekend
We would like to invite all subscribers to the competition weekend to see our locomotive and enjoy the challenges. The IMechE has posted the following information on its website regarding the competition:
"The final judging and assessment is carried out at Stapleford Miniature Railway in Leicestershire (postcode LE14 2SF). The competition weekend will take place from 29 June to 2 July 2017. Spectators will able to attend on either the Saturday or Sunday free of charge. If you are planning to attend the event as a spectator, Sunday is probably the best day as the locomotives will have passed scrutineering by then and will be competing against one another."
The Team are grateful to Wixroyd, RS Components, and Dassault Systemes, for continuing their support and providing us with some of the tools and components that will allow us to be competitive at the Railway Challenge competition in June.
We are always keen to explore potential sponsorship avenues, and have a range of benefits that can be offered in return for your support. If you or your organisation is interested in sponsoring the HudRail team in any way, please send the team an email, or drop us a message on Facebook or Twitter.
Testing is now a key focus for the Team, as we look to enhance our understanding of the locomotive’s abilities and iron out any remaining flaws in the design. One of the things which we will be working on regularly is the maintainability challenge, as we look to make a major time reduction on the performance from previous years. As such, regular practice is required!
Our undergraduate team members' projects are drawing to a close as they look to write up their reports in time for their assessment deadline. We have been working closely with these students to find out what their proposals are, and how we might be able to incorporate them into this year’s locomotive, or even into the work which we are carrying out to lay some of the foundations for next year’s team.
We have now placed some of the more crucial orders for new locomotive components and we are in the process of finalising the remaining orders to allow us the maximum possible time to assemble, test and further develop our locomotive before taking it to the competition.
