Learning to Machine 3D Scans with a ShopBot CNC

As a part of the TIES organization, ShopBot's Sallye Coyle along with Caroline McEnnis, TIES' Director of Engineering Education and Fab Lab, worked for three days with teachers, interns, and staff on a Professional Development session at the Chevron FabLab at California State University Bakersfield. The goal was to give these people more experience with the digital fabrication tools and electronic components available in their lab.
Using various tools and software available in the lab, and with the guidance of Sallye and Caroline, the attendees scanned themselves in 3D, and then both 3D printed and used a ShopBot CNC to create their likeness out of different materials. Read more of the details and see some photos on the ShopBot blog.

ShopBot on the Road
Fab 12 Recap
Fab 12, the 12th international gathering of FabLabs, took place in Shenzhen, China in August. The focus of Fab 12 was FABLAB 2.0: Fabricating the Future, the idea of fabrication tools being used to produce a Fab Lab and the manufacturing machines of the future. Since the Handibot was inspired by work of MIT students under the direction of MIT Professor Neil Gershenfeld, Center for Bits and Atoms, it seemed only proper that a Handibot travel to Shenzhen to take part in the festivities.
Sallye Coyle spent 10 days in Shenzhen, prepping the ShopBot tool at Shenzhen Open Innovation Lab (SZOIL) for use during the conference, then meeting and renewing friendships with Fab Labbers from around the world. To read more about the Symposium and the weekend's Fab Fest, as well as see some photos, see Sallye's post on the ShopBot blog.
