Making the Weekend
with a Handibot

The Handibot® Smart Power Tool is a pretty cool portable CNC tool that makes any number of DIY tasks easy to tackle. Sometimes the only challenge is coming up with an idea for a project. One place you can always go to get some inspiration is the Handibot Community on the Handibot website. Or you can check out the latest video of what ShopBot's Brian Owen has been up to. Buon appetito!

ShopBot On The Road

US Fab Lab Network

Sallye Coyle, ShopBot's Director of Outreach, attended The US Fab Lab Network annual meeting in Bentonville, Arkansas, March 21-23. A number of Community Colleges are represented in the USFLN, so Sallye was able to explore the role of Community Colleges as a pivot point between education/training/workforce development and prototyping/manufacturing. She also introduced a new opportunity for Community Colleges to join the network as Community Resource Centers for entrepreneurs, designers, fabbers and those interested in doing small-scale manufacturing.

ShopBot Camp in San Diego

When planning camps, ShopBot tries to collaborate with hosts whose spaces offer curiosity and interest beyond just their ShopBot tool. This April, the San Diego Camp ShopBot location hit all the proximity switches right on cue: The Old Globe Theatre’s Technical Shop situated east of downtown San Diego. Having outgrown the theatre’s available build space, the technical production shop expanded into a huge warehouse a few years back. Gillian Kelleher, their Master Carpenter, reached out to us about hosting a camp after attending one in 2014. Camp attendees heard presentations on best practices in 3D carving, calculating feeds and speeds, finding hidden gems in the SB3 software, uses for the Donek Drag Knife, and more. Read more and additional photos on the ShopBot blog.

100kGarages Opens its Doors
to Community Colleges

There's now the opportunity for community colleges to join the network as Community Resource Centers for nearby entrepreneurs, designers, fabbers and those interested in doing small-scale manufacturing. This is a great way for local colleges to both nurture and collaborate with startups and established businesses using digital fabrication. Learn more about the Pilot Program at

New Adventures of Shelter 2.0

ShopBot's Bill Young writes, "I’ve been making things with ShopBots and sharing designs for ShopBot projects since the early days, almost 20 years ago. There have been boats, furniture, and design tools like Open Source Joinery, but the thing I’m most proud of is a side project, Shelter 2.0, that I work on with my friend and collaborator Robert Bridges." This project is truly a labor of love, because the temporary housing that Shelter 2.0 provides fulfills a critical need. Check out Bill's post for the story and pics.

We must remember that everything depends on how we use a material, not on the material itself... New materials are not necessarily superior. Each material is only what we make it.
