From High School Student to Technical Instructor in Three Years!

Another proof point that CNC skills are valuable skills. Teacher Brett Dickinson reports: "When Grant Wolfe first started to learn how to use the ShopBot Buddy at Belton High School less than three years ago, he didn’t realize he would be helping train Belton students on that same equipment today. The depth of skill he developed was not lost on his Construction Tech Teacher, Craig Sullivan, and when Grant graduated in 2014, Sullivan found himself without one of his best helpers." Long story short, Grant's skills are so valued, he's now instructing students in CNC and ShopBot!

ShopBot was Here

Fab11 in Boston and Cambridge

Several people from ShopBot made a special point of attending Fab 11, the 11th annual World Conference of the FabLab movement that has spread from its beginnings at MIT to the far regions of the world. FabLabs — which feature ShopBot tools —bring the technologies of digital fabrication to people in smaller U.S. communities and in developing countries around the world, giving people the technological tools that can enable them to leapfrog into 21st century lean manufacturing for the betterment of their local communities.

ShopBot Goes to the Theatre (Conference)

ShopBot's Randy Johnson, Thea Eck, and Al Nyonteh were pleased to be seminar presenters at the USITT Master Classes in late August, held at the Playmakers Repertory Company on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill. The United States Institute for Theatre Technology advances the skills of performing arts professionals involved in the areas of design, production and technology. Our ShopBot team focused on providing CNC training sessions for technical theatre pros.

ShopBot is always interested in providing CNC training for specialized industries. If you're interested in such training related to your specific profession, get in touch here. We'll be happy to develop a training program for your group.

ShopBotters at Work

Designer Cindy Jian Uses ShopBot at TechShop San Francisco

We first encountered Cindy Jian while attending the World Maker Faire in San Mateo in May of 2015. Or rather we first saw the “3 for Life” exhibition, an oversized furniture installation. Cindy was instrumental in the construction of this eye-catching set of furniture. The installation involves a large-scale table, 2 dining chairs, and fridge. Participants eagerly climbed onto the chairs to get to the top of the table, where there was an oversized cookie jar surprise waiting for them. “We want people to have the sensory experience of remembering what it felt like to be a 3 or 4 year old in an adult-sized world,” said Cindy. Read the full story and see pictures at the ShopBot blog.

Furniture Maker Andrew Pitts Teaches CNC Workshop

Andrew Pitts of Heathsville, Virginia, is a self-taught custom furniture maker with 38 years experience. His beautiful, detailed work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and garnered more than a dozen awards. Pitts added CNC technology to his workshop two years ago with the purchase of a ShopBot Desktop, and has been so excited about its capabilities that he recently taught a beginning CNC course at Peters Valley School of Craft. See his video about the workshop here.

You can learn more about Andy and his incorporation of CNC on the ShopBot blog.

ShopBotters at Destination Arts

Here's a big shout-out to all of the enthusiastic ShopBotters who responded to Roney Conca's request for volunteers at the Destination Innovation event! Roney said, "This is part of Waynesboro, PA's downtown revitalization project, bringing attention to the town’s innovative Maker history with two back-to-back weekends of High Tech innovation demonstrations: 3D Printing, CNC routers, Robotics, Drones, Electric cars, Solar panels, Solar storage, and much more. Thanks to all the ShopBotters who volunteered!"
