On the Road to AWFS

Packed up and headed to AWFS 2017. Las Vegas, here we come!

Speaking of AWFS...

If you're attending the show, then why not plan to join us for a drink and a bite to eat? We'll be hosting a cocktail party at The Barrymore (99 Convention Center Drive) on Thursday, July 20th from 5:30pm-7:30pm. If you'd like to attend, either RSVP to by Tuesday, July 19th or just stop by our booth (#9477) and pick up an invite. We look forward to seeing you there!

ShopBotters at Work

It's a Fidget!

Devin Wilson, Carpentry and Technology teacher at Rosman High/Middle School in Rosman, NC, is always looking for ways to keep his students involved at school—even as the end of the school year approaches. In his recent blog post entry, he talks about his students introducing him to fidget spinners and how he turned their interest into a class project.

ShopBot on the Road

Professional Development in Washington

Mt. Spokane High School in Mead, WA, has added a ShopBot PRSstandard to their woodshop. ShopBot's Sallye Coyle visited Spokane in June to work with four teachers from two high schools to integrate Aspire CAD/CAM software and the ShopBot into their programs. Two of the participants are master teachers with Project Lead the Way, so they also designed files in Inventor, then brought them into Aspire/VCarve for toolpathing.

Teachers discussing how to integrate the “Stools for the whole family!” project, downloaded from the ShopBot website, into their classes for next school year.

See Sallye's blog post to read more about (and see more photos) on the topics covered during the 3-day professional development session.

Maker Faire Bay Area 2017 Recap

In May, the ShopBot team visited Maker Faire Bay Area, the West Coast’s premier gathering for creators, thinkers, and makers of all ages. At the booth, visitors cut custom nametags on Handibot using the FabMo Badger app, and watched the Desktop MAX cut custom skateboards. Check out some of the sights and sounds of the show in this roundup of the event over at the ShopBot Blog.

What Does Bill Young's Browser History Look Like?

There tends to be a lot more "noise" on the web than there is "signal," but these are some sites that I think are pretty inspiring...

Ceorfan Works
This is James Booth's new venture/diversion. You may know James from his work at Vectric...he's the voice of many of the tutorials and an amazing 3D model. Check out his website to see what sorts of things he does when he's left to his own devices.

If you are interested in adding blinking LEDs or other electronic doodads to your projects, Adafruit is the place to go. They manufacture most of the products they sell in New York and have great tutorials in the Adafruit Learning System. Here's an interesting article on their business and business model.

Andreas Bastian and LimbForge
Andreas Bastian is currently a Research Scientist at Autodesk and is on the board of LimbForge, the group working on digitally fabricated prosthetics.

Rob Bell and Zomadic
Longtime San Francisco ShopBotter Rob Bell specializes in digitally fabricating structures based on the zonohedral shape. As Rob says...“While a dome will tend to resemble a sphere, a Zome will resemble a jewel.”

And just to be a little self-serving, I've got a handful on posts on that hopefully you'll find interesting.
