Eagle Scout Gives Back

The Johnston Partnership Clothes Closet was fortunate to be chosen for James Grimm’s Eagle Scout Project.  James made this choice after he and his mother volunteered on a Saturday and noticed the need for more shelves and racks, better organization and offered to take on the project.

The result according to Monica Brich,
“The Tuesday/Thursday Clothing Closet volunteers were excited to see the remodeled clothing space & we were not disappointed!  The new hanging spaces for t-shirts help to better display the items and have significantly reduced the time needed to tidy the Closet at the end of shift. Two other great additions are: 1) a section of wall hooks where purses, scarves, and ties are neatly displayed, and 2) a new set of strong shelves that we can use to store off-season items.  All of these improvements lead to better display of items for our clients & time savings for volunteers. Thank you to James Grimm and all the others who made all the excellent improvements."
To accomplish this project James developed a written plan which was approved by the Partnership and Scouting officials, raised funds (about $120) plus other donations, recruited help, got all the materials to the site, instructed all the helpers and managed the work flow for the two-day project completed over the holiday break.  The result was new wall organization, more clothes hanging racks, new shelving and clean carpets throughout!!
Besides James and his parents, Jamie and April Grimm, several others helped with the project.   These included: Jamison Cunningham, Ian Ehredt, Keaton Walker, who are also scouts from Troop 97, several other scout parents, James’ grandfather and cousins worked on the project.   Local businesses who provided discounted supplies included: Johnston Hy-Vee (Rug Doctor & soap), Ace Hardware (paint & brushes), Home Depot (lumber) & Restore (discounted hooks). Over 3,000 clothing items go in/out of this space each month, and James' efforts make for a much better experience for volunteers and clients.

Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program.  Only four percent of Boy Scouts are granted this rank after a lengthy review process. The requirements necessary to achieve this rank take years to fulfill.  James, a sophomore at Johnston High, keeps busy with Advanced Placement classes and Mock Trial.   He already has career aspirations in the areas of Neurology or Psychiatry.
