2017 marks the 65th anniversary of Wigton Theatre Club, and it's the first time in all that history that we have performed a Shakespeare play. Please hare this post and come and support our hard-working actors in this exciting, fast paced love story!

The Prince, in charge of Law and Order in Verona, is fed up with the constant brawling and fighting between the members of the two most powerful families in the town, and threatens them with death, should they carry on. When Juliet and Romeo, the only children of the two families fall in love, the cycle of violence starts all over again with tragic consequences.

What is 'Poor Theatre'?
For this production, we concentrated on the text and the characters. This stripped back, pacy and energetic production looks at the timeless story in a new way. With much of the repetitious dialogue cut, we are left with a story which moves swiftly to its tragic conclusion.
Romeo and Juliet is in complete contrast to our pantomimes, where beautiful and elaborate sets, lots of music, and rich costumes are an essential part of the theatrical experience. In our current production, the bare stage, modern, minimal costumes and simple props, allow us to appreciate the poetry in all its poignancy- characters emerge in all their complexity and the emotions are raw and searing. Rehearsals have left us in tears.
Did  you  know ?
Grotowski coined the term ‘poor theatre’, defining a performance style that rid itself of the excesses of theatre, such as lavish costumes and detailed sets (hence ‘poor’). Poor Theatre pieces centre on the skill of the actor and are often performed with only a handful of props.
