Our Very Big Yet Very Small Food Industry: Career Paths & Intersections

Join us for a joint Alamo and Longhorn chapter IFT virtual event focused on bringing our chapter members together to share our most valuable resources – our people! The event is planned for Thursday, May 13th from 6:00 – 7:30pm and it will take place virtually. During the meeting we will hear perspectives from a series of speakers on the following questions.

  1. What do you do and why did you choose the food industry?

  2. If you had known earlier in your career what you know now, what would you do differently?

  3. What advice can you share for anyone that wants to advance or pivot in their careers?

A sampling of our speakers include:

  • Stephanie Thornton, Marketing Manager, Finlays

  • Scott McCormick, Principal Scientist, C.H. Guenther & Son

  • Janet Adams, Technical Sales Manager, Hanks Brokerage, Inc

  • Bruce Perkin, Principal Consultant, Robust Food Solutions, LLC

  • Madalyn Thibodeaux Broussard, Director of R&D, Double B Foods

  • C.J. Flannery, Scientific Recruiter, Beyond Meat

We are looking forward to learning more about our multi-generational and diverse workforce experience that, in many cases, shifts us to untraditional ways. We feel that this event will be beneficial to all members and students through:

  • Making connections between members, professionals, and students

  • Informing and helping new professionals and students understand the wide range of roles in the food industry

  • Sharing stories about our careers that may encourage coaching or mentoring opportunities

Why should you be a part of Longhorn IFT section?

"A person's professional and personal networks are important to having an effective and enjoyable life. We are all interconnected/interrelated in ways that we may not recognize until later in life. If you participate with LIFT, you learn, you share, you make lifelong friends, future employers, employees and you can hone the skills of your craft. You have fun".

Advice for New Members and New Professionals
"Step out of your comfort zone! Show up; at meetings and, to use an old Texas Aggie term..."Whip out" ---Introduce yourself and ask questions be interested in your colleagues careers & life. Accept the challenge if you are asked to Volunteer. Even better, ask someone how you can be helpful to the section. Offer a suggestion if think there might be something the leadership can facilitate more or in a better way".

Future of the Food Industry
"Agriculture in general has some exciting challenges ahead of it. How will we, as food scientists, meet the challenges of safely and economically feeding the world's growing population in the face of the environment, regulatory & political challenges. It is a shame so much of the public has relatively little scientific knowledge and tend to avoid engaging in rational discussion about the application of science to food. Food Scientists in academia and industry will have plenty to do".

Favorite Food
"For the last few years I've been baking European style yeasted or sourdough breads as well as milling my own flours from unique wheat and other grain varieties. I like to make butter from cultured cream to slather on it. I love a great loaf of bread or homemade corn tortillas from some cool corn varieties that I nixtamalize, blue, red, yellow  and white corn. I love and will try any cuisine that has its roots and ingredients from Texas and Southward, regional Mexican and farther south. The region is the birthplace of so many great ingredients".

Would you like to share anything else about yourself?
"I have a wonderful wife since 1986 two great kids a daughter, 31, who is going start to applying to become a Physicians Assistant and son, 28, who is a wildland firefighter in WY. The  kids say they've chosen their careers because it seems they are being helpful. It turns out that happens to by my personal simple mission statement. "Be Helpful".
