From our Chair-Elect:

Greetings everyone!

Thank you to all who took the time to venture up to Texas Woman’s University in Denton for our April meeting. Dr. Xiaofen Du and Dr. Shane Broughton detailed their Food Science and Flavor Chemistry postgraduate program. The Flavor Chemistry discipline of a Food Science curriculum is relatively exclusive to TWU and their success in this endeavor is proven by rapid growth in the department. Graduate students also showcased their individual thesis and were present and eager to answer all questions.
I am happy to announce our last meeting until the end of the summer at Bishop Cidercade. The Bishop Cider Company is currently the only local cider brewery in DFW and was started in 2014 by husband and wife team, Joel and Laura Malone. Join us on May 30, 2019 at 6:00 PM for a private tour and a crash course lesson on cider making. Dinner is included and and draft cider (30 ciders/wines on top) will be available for additional purchase. The facility also contains a very large arcade room with many classic games that can be played as much as you want n(over 170+ arcade games).

Hope to see you all there and come challenge me in some Mario Cart racing!

Mentors Wanted - IFT Mentorship Program
We have been asked if we would try to connect some of the Texas A&M students up with individuals who are already working in the food industry as mentors.

If you have any interest in helping a Food Science student get a better appreciation for how careers in the food industry unfold, and sharing your journey, then please reach out to Bruce Perkin, and he will gladly connect you to someone who would love to hear from you.

We have a broad cross section of students: 1 freshman, 3 sophomores, 2 juniors, and 3 seniors.
3 that are thinking about the advanced degree path, and one is looking at doing an MBA.
3 that are looking to get into product development, and one more interested in the flavors business.

All of them are looking to get advice from someone who has made the transition, and some guidance on how best to set themselves up for success as they prepare to make the transition themselves.

There is nothing formal about how much time you need to spend with any of the mentees, as it is totally up to you and what time you are prepared to give these young folks. However, if anyone would like some general guidance on mentoring before they agree to connect with one of the students, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Bruce, and he will be only too pleased to provide some support.
