Longhorn IFT 

April 2019  Newsletter
Our monthly meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 24th, 2019 at Texas Woman's University in Denton, TX. This will be a meeting and a great opportunity to get an appreciation of the great food science research work that is being done at TWU and a chance to meet with the students.

This is a FREE meeting to attend, but we would implore you to please continue to RSVP your spots to ensure that we order the right amount of food.

PARKING: Please print out a parking pass and place it on your dashboard. We will be allowed to park in designated "Visitor Parking" places. 
MAP: TWU Campus (Please park in parking lot of Administration Drive and N. Bell Ave (P). You will walk to the ACT building (picture below).

Chair Elect: Morgan Murphy
Morgan Murphy is currently in Sales as Vice President with Mother Murphy's Flavors. He graduated from Greensboro College and started his career in the production department of Mother Murphy's in North Carolina where he eventually moved to Texas in 2006. He travels a lot for work and his wife, Kim, keeps their three boys (Hank 4, Andrew 2, Wes 2) in check while he is gone. He currently serves as the chair of NextGen Baker with ABA (American Bakers Association), Young Professional Chair with ASB (American Society of Baking), and sits on the board of ATBI (Allied Trades of Baking Industry). He is passionate about the food-industry, generally pretty easy going, and considers himself the luckiest person he knows! He hopes to continue to improve the industry day by day and is super passionate about the food industry!


New Professionals Co-Chairs: Ellery Wood & Trey Welch
Ellery Welch is originally from Minneapolis, MN but moved to the DFW area 6 years ago. She enjoys being able to connect people and finds it an invaluable to build a network with various individuals and consistently learn more about the food industry. 

Trey Welch is born and raised here in Texas and has grown up in the DFW area. He plaed baseball in school at Grayson and has FOUR dogs. He enjoys positively impactiving lives for the better by finding people jobs and giving career advice. He's passionate about helping others, sports, and food. 

Both Ellery and Trey look forward to being able to connect scientific professionals with the right clients to further their career and getting everyone connected!

Social Media Manager: Viviana Rushton
Viviana Rushton is a motivated food science professional with applicable hard and soft skills, with an extensive background in food technology, production, marketing, and sales. Her skillsets lend themsleves to working well with marketing and social media outlets. She looks forward to promoting and raising IFT Longhorn brand awareness. 


Members at Large: CJ Flannery
C.J. Flannery joined the Food Industry when she officially opened the doors of Sweetie Cakes Bakery in 2012. While obtaining her Bachelors from Texas Women's University, she sold her business to pursue her passion for the industry on a larger scale. Actively involved in the  Food Industry and the network that comprises it, she's involved on the bakery manufacturing side, as well as sauces and dressings and thoroughly enjoys interfacing with people in her day-to-day. She is now an Executive Recruiter for the Food Industry and enjoys business development and relationship-building, assisting companies and candidates alike. In her downtime, C.J. enjoys volunteering, perfecting recipes and spending time with her husband and little girl.

Mentors Wanted - IFT Mentorship Program

We have been asked if we would try to connect some of the Texas A&M students up with individuals who are already working in the food industry as mentors.

If you have any interest in helping a Food Science student get a better appreciation for how careers in the food industry unfold, and sharing your journey, then please reach out to Bruce Perkin, and he will gladly connect you to someone who would love to hear from you.

We have a broad cross section of students: 1 freshman, 3 sophomores, 2 juniors, and 3 seniors.
3 that are thinking about the advanced degree path, and one is looking at doing an MBA.
3 that are looking to get into product development, and one more interested in the flavors business.

All of them are looking to get advice from someone who has made the transition, and some guidance on how best to set themselves up for success as they prepare to make the transition themselves.

There is nothing formal about how much time you need to spend with any of the mentees, as it is totally up to you and what time you are prepared to give these young folks. However, if anyone would like some general guidance on mentoring before they agree to connect with one of the students, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Bruce, and he will be only too pleased to provide some support.



Restaurant Food Safety Scientist - Pizza Hut Corporate (Plano, TX)
The Restaurant Food Safety Scientist is part of the broader Food Safety & Quality (FSQ) team which is focused on food safety risk prevention from field to fork. The candidate will need to develop strong relationships with cross functional partners, other brand / YUM FSQ teams, suppliers, restaurant field operators including Franchise and Licensee partners. The person must have a passion for food safety and the drive to foster continuous improvement.
