Beat cold callers and doorstep scammers with Friends Against Scams

The National Trading Standards Scams Team have launched Friends Against Scams (FAS) to help people learn how to detect and avoid scams. Sessions are open to all, from the general public to professionals. 

To become a Friend Against Scams, simply take the online awareness course. You can also attend a training session in person - find your nearest session.

New workshops for parents and carers of children/young people with SEN 

Kids Croydon has two workshops for parents/carers and young people coming up in February at East Croydon United Reform Church (small hall), Addiscombe Grove, Croydon, CR0 5LP:
  • Wednesday 22 February 2017 (10am – 12pm) Personal Budgets Workshop delivered by George Riley, 0-25 SEND Social Care Delivery Manager at Croydon
  • Wednesday 22 March 2017 (10am-12pm) SEN Support in School: What are the statutory duties? Workshop delivered by Judith Lunnon, Improvement Advisor: Effectiveness of SEN Interventions.  
Each workshop is free for parents/carers and young people and £10 for professionals. Both sessions provide great opportunities to ask professionals questions and meet up with other parents and carers.  To book, contact

Whitgift Foundation animation

The Whitgift Foundation released their first ever animation to tell their story and share their fascinating history. The story begins over 400 years ago with founder Archbishop John Whitgift in Croydon and takes viewers through today, where the Foundation educates over 3,000 students, supporting nearly half of them financially. The Foundation also cares for over 100 residents in their care homes and supports the borough's carers, as well as producing the Croydon Heritage Festival. Watch the animation here.

Have you heard of State Pension top up?

State Pension top up lets those who reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016 boost their State Pension income by up £25 per week in return for a lump sum contribution. If you have gaps in your National Insurance record, it may be more cost effective to make voluntary contributions first.

The extra amount is index linked, guaranteed for life and in most cases inheritable by a spouse or civil partner. The scheme is open until 5 April 2017. Read more:

Visit the cinema for less with the CEA Card

The CEA Card is a UK cinema card scheme entitling the cardholder to one free additional ticket for a carer. Around 90% of cinemas accept the card. To be eligible, you need to receive:
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Attendance Allowance (AA)
  • Blind Persons Registration
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
The card costs £6 and can be ordered from the UK Cinema Association (formerly Cinema Exhibitors' Association/CEA). To get your card, apply online or by post. For more information, contact 023 9224 8545
