Carers Week
12 - 18 June 2017: our biggest yet!

Carers Week 12-18 June 2017 is fast approaching and there's lots on offer at the Carers Support Centre. Highlights of the week include:

  • Relaxing massage, dance, henna hand painting and art sessions
  • Vintage afternoon tea at the Carers Café 
  • 'Meet a professional' drop-ins
  • Find out about local carer support and health services
  • Opportunity to have your say on Croydon's Carers Strategy
  • And much, much more!

Carers' Information Day
Wednesday 14 June 2017, 10am - 2pm

Pick up useful information, meet local carers and professionals and find out what support is available at our annual information event for carers in Croydon. Lunch and refreshments will be provided, thanks to generous support from the Big Lottery Fund. Drop in any time between 10am - 2pm - we look forward to seeing you there!

Coffee with a Copper: date change for May

Our next Coffee with a Copper session will take place on 24 May, 10.30am - 12.30pm instead of 17 May as previously advertised. Carers are welcome to drop in to the Carers Café to chat with a local police officer over a cup of tea or coffee.

We need your vintage items!

Are you having a spring clear out? We are looking for vintage-style donations for our Carers Week afternoon tea, and would love to receive the following items:
  • Tablecloths
  • Sugar tongs
  • Bunting
  • Coffee cups and saucers
  • Cake stands
  • Sugar bowls

Working Carers Support Group - new wellbeing events!

The Working Carers Support Group has an exciting range of wellbeing events coming up, including:

9 May - 'Stress buster' massage at the Carers Support Centre
13 June - 'Stress buster' massage at the Carers Support Centre
11 July - Art therapy at Studio Upstairs, Park Street
8 August - Pilates at the Carers Support Centre
12 September - Mindfulness meditation​ at the Carers Support Centre

Vacancy - Carers Business Support Apprentice

Croydon Council is advertising a 12 month apprenticeship for a young adult carer or former young carer in Croydon. The role aims to provide a young adult carer with experience of working in the public sector and to support their career development.

Caring for someone who is, or who has been in, a mental health in-patient setting?

A researcher from St George's, University of London, is asking carers about their experiencing of attending ward rounds. Taking part would involve a one-off interview with a researcher, either in person or over the telephone.

West End theatre ticket giveaway

David Baddiel is offering 10 free tickets per night exclusively for carers for his new show, David Baddiel - My Family: Not The Sitcom. The show is described as "a massively disrespectful celebration of the lives of David Baddiel’s late mother, Sarah, and dementia-ridden father, Colin." Find out more.

Creating Conversations: Dying Matters Week

Mental Capacity, Court of Protection and Power of Attorney 

Thursday 11 May, 10am - 12.30pm
Trainer: Philip Warford
The workshop will explain the principles around mental capacity and what you need to consider. Philip will talk about Power of Attorney, the appointment of someone to make a decision on behalf of a person with a learning disability, and how Power of Attorney can be used.  To book a place, call the Parents in Partnership office on 020 8663 5626 or email

Please offer me a seat badge now available permanently 

Travellers with a less visible disability can now get a 'Please offer me a seat' card and badge to use on public transport from Transport for London (TfL). The scheme is intended to make it easier to let other passengers know that you need a seat. 

To apply, visit the TfL website or call TfL Customer Services on 0343 222 1234.

Don't Miss Out! 

Do you have a learning disability or support someone who does? By adding your name to the Learning Disability Register, you can get better healthcare. You could also have a free Annual Health Check. Mencap has some videos and guides to make sure you don't miss out: learn more.

New Tax Free Childcare scheme starts 

The new tax-free childcare is now open to parents of a disabled child or parents of children under 4 on 31 August, and will be gradually rolled out throughout 2017: learn more.

For every £8 you pay into the scheme, the government adds an additional £2 into your Tax-Free Childcare account. However, if you receive tax-free childcare, you cannot receive Universal Credit, Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit or employer childcare vouchers. Contact a Family has more information: learn more.
