Farewell to George Foxcroft
A heavy-hearted farewell to retired UAlberta professor of swine physiology George Foxcroft, colleague over the years to Gentecers Michael Dyck, Jenny Patterson and Graham Plastow. George passed away in December 2021. George excelled at putting research and tools in the hands of producers, highlighting a contribution to agriculture that lives on in his name.

WANTED! Post-doc for beef research project
A post-doctoral fellow position is open at the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science, UAlberta, working on a new project examining the relationship between genomics, cattle grazing behaviour (diet and habitat selection), and performance, while grazing on open pasture. The long-term goal is to develop and implement genomics tools to improve the environmental sustainability, feed efficiency and other economically-relevant traits of beef cattle while grazing during various phases of the Canadian beef cattle production cycle.

The Wall Street Journal’s article on “farmcore” influencers highlights how two farmers show only idyllic farm life on social media, skewing how consumers view agriculture. In contrast, the Canadian Beef Industry Conference 2021 put two social media influencers actually on the farm to see “the real thing.” Read more here.
