Happy New Year to all our stakeholders. May you be happy, warm and wise in 2020 and beyond!

Gentec helps feed the world, one animal at a time

It’s one thing to produce more feed-efficent animals, it’s another to feed hungry human mouths. At this time of goodwill, we contributed (so far) 2 dairy cows, 1 goat, 4 pigs and 6 chickens to that effort through the Food for the Hungry (give a gift) website. We felt it was the least we could do—and a satisfying way to share some of the good fortune we enjoy in the developed world.

Gold Star Dam of Distinction award for Kinsella cow

A Charolais cow at the Roy Berg Kinsella research ranch has received a Gold Star Dam of Distinction award for her genetic contribution to the Charolais industry (see certificate above).

The Dam of Distinction award reflects successful genetic selection, breeding and management of the cattle herd at Kinsella. Congratulations to all the team members!

"Connecting people and science in a post-truth world"

Long-time Gentec collaborator, Sylviane Duval, has just released a workshop on this must-know topic for everybody who communicates science to stakeholders and the public. View the one-pager on the workshop here, and listen to Genome Alberta's podcast about it here.

 Gentec in the media

A big Thank You to the Western Producer for highlighting just how relevant to industry our research is. Swineweb featured Gentec-associated researcher Mike Dyck's Genome Canada project on resiliency.

BCRC's blog post on Nature vs Nurture by Gentec Management Advisory Board member Dr. Reynold Bergen features a study by Gentec researcher Carolyn Fitzsimmons on how the environment affects genes.

Canadian Simmental bull wins BIG at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE)

Congratulations to former Canadian Simmental Association board member Larry Barkley of Hi-Tech Farms and his yearling bull, Flashpoint. Together, they brought home First in Class and Grand Champion Bull Fleck Effect banners from NAILE in November. NAILE is the largest all-breed, purebred livestock event in the world.

Possible new vaccine against bovine TB

Researchers have found a way around the current dilemma that vaccinating cows against TB also makes them test positive in tests for the disease (which means they are culled). As a result, producers don't vaccinate their cows. Find out more here.

Got $140,000 to buy ONE cow?

The cost of everything is going up, including cows. A seemingly perfect black Angus cow from Coaldale, Alberta sold for $140,000 in November, setting a record for the industry. Read more here.

Let's talk carbon

Steve Kenyon explains why producers should want to sequester carbon rather than emit. Read his very convincing article here.
