Gene editing series: What you haven't thought to ask yet

We started to look at gene editing and livestock in our April 2022 edition with a question from Kajal Devani: “In view of supply chain issues, labour shortages, food shortages, war and climate change… Are these products coming to market too soon or not soon enough? "

In this edition, we continue with two articles:
  • Myths and Misconceptions. What will milk look like in the grocery store of the future? One vision says we’ll be seeing gene-edited milk on the shelves. We’re already seeing plenty of plant-based milk alternatives so what will be different for GE milk? Will improving animal welfare help? Read more here.
  • We can do it... but should we? Is gene editing just science for the sake of science? Gentec CEO Graham Plastow weighs in. Read more here.

At the Grill with William Torres: Meat labelling

This month’s At The Grill feature by William Torres (former Research Manager at Cattleland Feedyards and popular presenter at Gentec conferences) focuses on labelling meat that has been raised different ways. Read more here.

The evolving world of livestock product labelling

Gentec collaborator Ellen Goddard takes a look at labelling and how livestock genomics fits into some of the new developments. The animal’s genetic fingerprint can be verified along the chain. Read more here.

Evaluating environmental benefits of pastures and forage land

Led by Angela Bedard-Haughn at USask and Gentec collaborator Cameron Carlyle at UAlberta, a $3.2 million project will examine carbon sequestration in perennial forages and pastures. Read more here.

How much do cows contribute to Amazon deforestation?

Join Gentec collaborators Tim McAllister and Kim Stanford as they discuss the role cattle play in deforestation of the Amazon with Raoni Rajao of the Federal University of Minas Gerais. Are cattle the ones driving the bus or the idiots holding the smoking gun after the crime? Listen to the podcast here.
