Roy Berg Kinsella Research Ranch Field Day showcases next-gen ranching tools

The Rangeland Research Institute and Gentec partnered up on July 20, 2022 to host a field day at the UAlberta’s Roy Berg Research Ranch in Kinsella, Alberta. The event focused on innovations in land and animal technologies to build climate resilience and showcasing pioneering tools and approaches, such as precision ranching, virtual fencing, drone use, GrowSafe feed bunks and genomics tools. Read more here and check out the shot video below.

At the Grill with William Torres: To fart or not to fart. Meat is the answer!

This month’s At The Grill feature by William Torres (former Research Manager at Cattleland Feedyards and popular presenter at Gentec conferences) tells us why cattle are NOT the villains of climate change, and how to argue that case. Read more here.

2022 4H Beef Carcass Competition: Genomics offers new tools for beef production

It is no secret that today’s youth are interested in anything techy so, in response, Gentec has made a point of engaging with 4H organizations across Alberta in 2022 to share information about our validated genomics solutions to help the beef industry’s bottom line. The strategy is working! Read more here.

Gentec goes to the "Olympics of animal breeding"

To those in the know, that's the World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production (WCGALP). This year, Gentec members and alumni participated and shared experience that reflect on our success in training livestock genomics researchers. Check out a summary of presentations here and the papers we presented here.

Ouch! My pen-mate bit my tail!

One feature at WCGALP was the papers on novel welfare-related traits and the view that they should get more attention in breeding programs and be included in the breeding objectives, particularly for group-housed species like chickens and pigs. Read here what Gentec is doing for pig welfare.

It's a long, HOT summer everywhere

In June 2022, thousands of beef cattle died due to a heat dome in Kansas. In Europe, chickens are sipping sports drink, and milk output is shrinking. BC is braced for another heat event in August. Gentec is looking at the genetic variation in resilience to heat stress, with support from RDAR. This project, “Remote Sensing of Heat Stress in Beef Cattle to Provide New Options for its Mitigation," is bringing together new sensor and camera technologies to understand the potential to select for more “drought / heat resistant” animals that can function in Western Canada, and the relationship with other production traits.
