What:      Celebrate Illinois Prairie Week with us!


House Keeping:
  1. Please bring a mask with you to all events. If we are outside and 6' apart, you do not need it but if we are in an enclosed area or closer than 6' please use the mask. Keep it in your pocket.  We will have new masks if you need one.
  2. Masks, hand sanitizer and gloves will be available.

PHNRC PRAIRIE WEEK WORKDAY 
SUNDAY 9/19/2021

What:      Boardwalk Construction and Trail Prep.


This Prairie Week workday we will be back at Headquarters assembling the modular boardwalk sections in support of Felix Weirich's Eagle Scout Project. We will also do a split crew to begin the trail preparation and continue with the plantings.
 
The weather is expected to be a toasty 84° and partially cloudy. We will supply all tools, instructions, supervision, snacks and plenty of water. Parking is on the Slough side of Marion and Maple facing Willow Road.

SEED COLLECTION - WEDNESDAY 9/22/2021

What:      Seed Collection

What better way to enjoy Prairie Week than to be out on the prairie at sunset?!

Today we will be at our very own ComEd Prairie conversion harvesting a boatload of seed. The day is forecasted as 67° with a great sunset, making this the quiscential fall seed collection event. This will be a great day spent with good friends doing meaningful work.

We will supply all tools, instructions, supervision and plenty of water. Parking is on the east side of Sherwood in-between both prairies.

NATURE SPEAKS THURSDAY 9/23/2021 ALLISON SACERDOTE VELAT

Most people know Dr. Sacerdote-Velat as one of the leading authorities on Green Snakes but did you know she is one of the foremost authorities on buckthorn? Please join us for this most informative talk on Prospect Height's public enemy # 1, buckthorn!

The NRC receives more calls and questions about invasive buckthorn than anything else. We invite residents to zoom in and learn first hand just how bad this guy is and why we all want to remove it!

FIRST FALL BIRD WALK - 9/25/2021

What:      First Fall Bird Walk of 2021

 
This kicks off the 7th season of Mary Lou leading our fall and spring bird walks. The Prospect Heights Natural Resources Commission and the Prospect Heights Park District invite you to join our expert birder Mary Lou Mellon from the Bird Conservation Network and PHNRC Commissioners as we walk around the Slough experiencing the wonder of birds and learning how to spot birds and identify them. Learn where to look for birds in your community and how to adjust binoculars for your eyes. Commissioners will also be discussing the restoration efforts.
 
Birders must have their own binoculars and dress for the weather. Participants will meet at the Isaak Walton Park on Elmhurst Road at 7:30 am and leave directly from there. Social distancing of 6 to 10’ and a mask is required for the unvaccinated. This is a free event but you must register. Click the register link to register or call the Park District at 847.394.2848.

ART CAMP AND POP-UP ART SALE - 9/25/2021

What:      Park District Art Camp - Wildflowers on Wood


The Sunflower Project is at it again!! Resident artists from the infamous Sunflower Project, Kate Tully and Mara Loviseotto, will be conducting a workshop in the splendor of the Prospect Heights Slough and helping you create a beautiful painting on wood, based on native wildflowers. All materials will be supplied. PHNRC commissioners will be on hand to tell you all about the native plants and why they are so important. The workshop is open to children and adults with participation limited to 20 people. Registration fee of $10 dollars is required to cover materials and supplies. Click the register link to register or call the Park District at 847.394.2848.

POP-UP ART SALE

What:      Pop-up Art Sale


Organized by the Artists of the Sunflower Group, the pop-up arts sale features works by more than 8 artists that include paintings, wood turning, jewelry, ceramics and more. They invite you to come out and enjoy a walk at the Slough, view the installed works from the "View of the Slough" show, hear some music and get your Christmas shopping done early!

Parking at the Izaak Walton is limited. Overflow parking is available on Hillside Avenue to the south of the pavilion. Cash or check is accepted for most purchases.
