Smarter Lunchrooms in Action!
Las Virgenes Unified School District
At Las Virgenes Unifed School District, Waleska Cannon, Director of Child Nutrition Services, and Kathy Soleimani, Central Kitchen Manager, have coordinated and strategized all year long to incorporate the SLM principles, creative names, floor decals and fun signage at Sumac Elementary School and Alice C. Stelle Middle School. Nudging students toward healthier choices is helping develop habits that last a lifetime.

Fullerton Union High School District Cooking Up Change

Cooking up Change® provides high school students from low-income schools the opportunity to transform the school lunch menu, develop valuable culinary arts skills and become leaders in school food reform. In addition,it encourages them to seek a post-secondary education and utilize their knowledge in culinary or nutrition science careers. Each student team is challenged to create a new lunch menu following a strict set of criteria, including ingredients commonly found in a school cafeteria, a budget of $1.25 per serving, all while making it creative, great tasting and nutritious.
