Smarter Lunchrooms in Action!
As schools successfully increase the offerings of fresh foods and healthy meals, the next challenge is to decrease the amount of food that ends up in the trash. A plate waste study was implemented at Estock Elementary School in Tustin Unified School District to tackle the challenge of food waste. Read the entire story here.
SLM of CA Announcements
March 5-9 California Food Waste Prevention Week

March is National Nutrition Month©, and this year’s theme is “Go Further With Food.” Since no food is truly nutritious unless it is eaten, a number of California state agencies are partnering with the Public Health Alliance of Southern California to launch the first Food Waste Prevention Week, March 5–9.

Schools can help reduce food waste through nutrition education, which addresses appropriate food portion sizes; how to read food labels; how to plan, prepare and shop for food; and much more.
For more information on food waste prevention, view the following resources:
March 5-9 National School Breakfast Week

This year’s theme for National School Breakfast Week, “I Heart School Breakfast,” encourages parents, students, and school officials to get social over school breakfast. Speaking a language kids understand, be ready to show-and-tell all the benefits of a healthy school breakfast. Find tools and resources here!
