SAN DIEGO’S HALEY GIAVARA UPSETS 4TH SEED DANIELLE LAO TO
ADVANCE TO SECOND ROUND AT SHOEBACCA WOMEN’S OPEN

Tuesday’s Matches to Begin at 10 a.m. (PST) at Morgan Run Club & Resort

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – (February 24, 2020) – It was quite a day for 19-year-old Haley Giavara as the local wild card from the San Diego community of Tierrasanta used a powerful baseline game to eliminate fourth-seeded Danielle Lao 6-1, 6-3 to move into the second round of the $25,000 Shoebacca Women’s Open at Morgan Run Club & Resort.

Giavara is currently a freshman at University of California, Berkeley, where she plays collegiate tennis for the Golden Bears. She is ranked No. 751 in the latest Women’s Tennis Association singles rankings.

“It feels really good. I think anyone can beat anyone on any given day. I just went with my game. I know what works and what doesn’t. She (Lao) was mentally tough, but I just stayed calm and stuck with it,” Giavara said following her first-round victory.

After losing in the final round of qualifying in last year’s tournament, Giavara was overjoyed to win her first match in this year’s main draw.

“It’s nice to have that confidence being back here in my hometown. I felt good on the court. Having my family here is amazing. I’ve been looking forward to this. It means so much. It’s extra special,” said Giavara, who will meet the winner of the first-round match between American Alexa Noel and qualifier Diane Parry of France.

In other first-round main draw singles action, Alexa Glatch dispatched fellow American and sixth-seed Claire Liu 6-4, 6-4 and second-seeded Olga Danilovic of Serbia outlasted American wild card entrant Lorraine Guillermo 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.

Top-seeded Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, a former US Open semifinalist, will play her first-round match on Tuesday as she faces American Grace Min in the third match on Court No. 1. It is scheduled to begin Not Before 12:30 p.m. (PST).

The final qualifying round was played on Monday as Americans Hanna Chang, Maegan Manasse, and former USTA Girls’ Nationals 18s champion Kayla Day were among the eight qualifiers advancing to the main singles draw.
