The End of an Era

Dear Friends and Alumni of Roy & Dora Whitman Academy,

This month, we had to say goodbye to two of the steadfast pillars of the Roy & Dora Whitman community. In the wee hours of the morning, February 1st, Dick and Robin Hart flew out of Jordan for the last time as working professionals to enter their new life of retirement and grandparenthood in the United States. They have served close to 40 years in Jordan and the Middle East, 20 of those years directly involved in and supporting our school. In 1996, Robin began volunteering at the school when they enrolled their daughter, Christy.  Over the years, she served in a completely volunteer capacity as school nurse, board member, interim principal, vice principal, book orderer, supply organizer, event organizer, etc. etc. – Wherever she saw a need, she pitched in without having to be asked. I’ve had to hire 4 people to replace her!

Dick came in early on as well. He almost single handedly worked to get the school licensed and reopened in the year 2000. He was one of the initiators and maintainers of the Foreign Educational Services Company that acts as the owner’s body for Whitman in Jordan, serving in the executive committee up until the announcement of his retirement. He helped establish the school as a 501C-3 non-profit in the US and set up a fund-raising campaign and a base of Whitman friends.
Dr. and Mrs. Hart

In May, 2016, we held a gala dinner going away party for them complete with speeches and gifts, but nothing could ever repay them for the love, sweat and tears that they have poured into the school, staff, students, and community. We will always love you, Dick and Robin!!

Families, staff, and students had a chance to say farewell one last time right before the Harts left.

Many Blessings,

Since leaving Jordan, Joshua Racey, Class of 2008, attended university and then spent a year in Dallas. He traveled over two summers to three countries, helping the Clarks in their Sfax Academy in Tunisia, (like a baby Whitman Academy!), teaching art at a children's home in Uganda, and counseling at a camp in Germany. He spent last year in Australia doing outdoor education. He recently got a job with a company that contracts to write newsletters for railroads. He says, “I have to credit the job to God. It fits me well. It keeps me interested, which is unusual. It was the highest level of work I applied for but the only company that asked to interview. I praise God for what He is doing”.
