In 2014, the Ministry of Education gave us a warning that we had 1 year to comply to the law that required all schools that had grades 10-12 to have a minimum of 600m² of outdoor, paved space for students. We had to comply or close down the upper school. We immediately started looking for a new building for secondary that met the regulations. The lot directly behind the school was empty, but investigations revealed that the owner was not willing to negotiate the 120,000JD/year rental rate. We thought that was a closed door. We kept looking.
Then, in January 2015, the government instated a new law that all schools, no matter what their grade level or population had to have at least 500m². Whitman only had a little more than 400m². We now had to find even more space. None of the places we found were working out. Time was ticking away. We prayed. We tried to get the ministry to give us an exception. Nothing was working.
Then one day a miracle happened. On his own initiative, the owner of the empty lot came to the school and offered to negotiate to rent. In the end, he came down to 1% of his original asking price! We were back in business.
We filled in and paved the lot over the winter, enabling us to use it for the late spring and fall, AND most importantly, received our license from the MoEd. God supplied our needs even when we thought all hope was gone. My prayer, last year, was the verse from Ephesians 3:20 “Now to Him Who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us.” Please pray with us that we will be able to rent the lot as long as we need it and for the continued reasonable price.
