MacChangers project leads to healthcare-focused startup

Hosam Abdel Hafeez, Taha Parvez and Vikash Nanthakumar are third year iBioMed students who are the co-founders of AIRefer, offering a centralized medical referral system. AIRefer was recently accepted to The Forge Business Incubator at McMaster University, receiving $3,000 in seed funding, mentorship, dedicated office space and access to their investor referral program. Their journey began a year ago when they enrolled in the MacChangers, a co-curricular program that pairs multidisciplinary teams with community partners to propose innovative solutions to local challenges facing the Hamilton community, as well as the global community. It was through MacChangers that the team's interests and passions merged when they met with doctors, specialists and patients and saw a need for change.

Research on Teaching and Learning Conference

The Paul R. MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Excellence in Teaching is excited to announce the return of the Research on Teaching and Learning Conference.

December 5 - 6, 2019
Location: David Braley Health Sciences Centre

The theme for this year focuses on Research on Teaching and Learning Within and Across the Disciplines. Disciplinary connection is a defining feature of research on teaching and learning. This conference provides an opportunity for a 'deep dive' into current issues and trends within different disciplinary contexts while simultaneously providing spaces to discuss points of convergence and connection across disciplinary boundaries and contexts.

  • Oct. 22nd, learn how to identify predatory or deceptive publishers;
  • Oct. 23rd, representatives from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario will provide sessions on using the Open Government Portal. You can also drop-by the pop-up booth in Mills Lobby to ask questions about datasets for your research; and
  • Oct. 24th, hear guest speaker Dr. Rachel Harding present on her research on Huntington's Disease and argue for open science policies. This presentation will be followed by a panel discussion on Open Science made up of faculty and graduate students.

All events are free and refreshments will be provided.

Invitation to Participate in Research about Equity-Focused Pedagogical Partnerships
Are you a current or past student, staff, or faculty member who has participated in a pedagogical partnership?

Did the project(s) on which you partnered focus on enhancing equity and inclusion in higher education or result in equity-related impacts (as defined by you)?
We would like to invite you to participate in a 45-60 minute in-person or Skype interview. You will also be asked to complete an optional demographic form. We are interested in learning more about the impacts and experiences of partnering on projects to enhance equity and inclusion in higher education. We hope to contribute to the growing body of literature about student-staff partnership, and to the development and refinement of a pilot stream of the SPP that focuses on equity and inclusion more specifically. Please see the Letter of Information for further details.
You will receive a $10 gift card for either Starbucks or Amazon, in recognition of your time.

Join the SoTL Scholars Teaching and Learning Network
Interested in discussing and hearing more about the scholarship of teaching and learning at McMaster? There is a TLN for that!

All McMaster educators that would like to engage with peers regarding SoTL are welcome to join our Teaching and Learning Network (TLN). The NEW SoTL Network provides opportunities for SoTL Scholars to share knowledge and experiences within an informal space creating possibilities of inquiring about and reflecting upon SoTL practices. The goal of the Network is to build SoTL capacity, exchange ideas, create a repository of resources and develop meaningful partnerships amongst educators. Any McMaster faculty/staff working on a teaching and learning research project or simply interested in learning more about the scholarship of teaching and learning is welcome to join the network.
