This week, UK broadcasters BBC and ITV are planning a domestic launch of their joint venture subscription video-on-demand service BritBox, which is currently available in the US. The service, which offers a suite of British content from the broadcasters, is hoping to draw customers away from US streaming giants, Netflix and Amazon.

US entertainment studio Mythical Entertainment has acquired Smosh, the long-running YouTube comedy channel, and Swedish media company MTG - which has been shifting TV assets as it moves towards digital - has sold its 95% share in Bulgaria’s Nova Broadcasting Group. In Finland, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has launched video-on-demand service Paramount+ in conjunction with Telia, making it available without a pay TV subscription for the first time in the Nordics.

The UK's ITV has inked a deal with Spanish Football League La Liga to show weekly, free-to-air matches on ITV4, and sports streaming service DAZN has launched in Spain, with a subscription fee of €4.99 a month, a significantly lower price than in other European markets.

In Germany, media conglomerate VIMN and multiplay telco Deutsche Telekom have partnered to launch Nick+ on Deutsche Telekom’s MagentaTV service, and Malaysia-based VoD service iflix has struck a deal with Blue Ant Media to add programming from their preschool nature channel ZooMoo. Netflix has continued investing in Africa, signing a deal for its second South African series, teen-led drama 'Blood and Water'.
