This week, AMC-owned British content-streamer Acorn TV showed its global ambitions, launching in 30 new markets, while NBCU-owned reality service hayu has expanded into Benelux.

Just a week after announcing it would look into commissioning an African original next year (see The Amp issue 106), Netflix has jumped the gun and commissioned new African drama Queen Sono. South East Asian streaming service HOOQ has partnered with Vice Media to produce three new Indonesian originals. Ex-Dreamworks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg's upcoming mobile streaming service, now dubbed Quibi, will spend almost $500m on content prior to its launch.

'Netflix of sports', Eleven Sports could be facing closure in the UK & Ireland thanks to low subscriber growth. The platform is reportedly attempting to renegotiate a number of its rights deals. Meanwhile, Disruptive sports OTT service, DAZN, has nabbed rights to the Premier League in Canada, taking the competition from linear TV in the nation.

Free-to-air providers have been busy this week, with Freeview NZ launching a streaming stick, and Canadian public broadcaster CBC debuting a streaming service with a subscription-based ad-free tier, while Scottish commercial broadcaster STV has partnered with Virgin Media to add an app to its set-top boxes.
