Disney gave a few more clues to its direct-to-consumer plans this week, confirming the name Disney+ and revealing that a slate of franchise-based originals for the service are already in production. Netflix is ramping up its Asian original production, with a focus on India. The streaming giant has also partnering with South Korea's LG U+ platform to offer its service on the company's set top boxes. Netflix also hired Sky's former Head of Drama, Anne Mensah, with the news coming mere hours after the announcement of her Sky exit.

US premium streaming service StarzPlay is coming to the UK with an agreement to launch on Virgin Media cable and Spain's AtresMedia—owner of national broadcaster Antena 3—is launching it's Atresplayer service globally with a subscription model.

Communications group CommScope has agreed to buy tech outfit ARRIS International in a $7.4bn deal and Japan's Softbank has gained approval for a $21.04bn IPO on the Tokyo stock exchange.

UK incumbent mobile operator EE is jumping on the 5G hype train with a planned 5G service—dubbed a 'premium mobile experience'—in 16 UK cities next year. As the first 5G smartphones are not expected imminently, consumers wishing to take advantage of the faster mobile airwaves may need to rely on dedicated mobile broadband devices.

Finally, the UK's Sky has netted additional Premier League rights, including near-live mobile rights, allowing subscribers to watch goals and other clips almost immediately after they've happened.
