PLATFORM brings together the coordination initiatives in the area of food, agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture, forestry, climate, biodiversity, and biotechnologies, with the aim to improve exchange and cooperation and to strengthen their impact on the ERA and the European bioeconomy.

PLATFORM Season’s Greetings

PLATFORM wishes to thank you all for your collaborations, contributions and participations to PLATFORM and its activities and events of the past year.  Highlights of the year where the Master Class on Inclusiveness 10-11 May, Vienna, Austria; the Annual Event 2016 in Ljubljana, Slovenia on 6-7 October and the launch of PLATFORM DB for which we would like to special thank the coordinators of the P2Ps for their contributions in checking and providing the data to be able to make the database a profound source of information on the bioeconomy.

Save the dates for PLATFORM events 2017

In 2017 PLATFORM is organising several events:

  • 7-8-9 June 2017: Back-to-back Master Class on Cofund Call implementation (7-8 June) and Workshop on Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact Assessment (8-9 June), Copenhagen, Denmark
  • 5-6 October 2017: The PLATFORM Annual Event of 2017,  Rome, Italy

The events are for invitees only. Network coordinators and call managers will be contacted to suggest candidates. Outcomes and presentations will be published on the PLATFORM website to be downloaded for a wider public. Closer to date, more information will be made available on the PLATFORM website.

Workshop for the Participation of Non-EU Black Sea and EaP Countries in COFUND ERANETs & JPIs

A “Workshop for the Participation of Non-EU Black Sea and EaP Countries in Thematic COFUND ERANETs & JPIs” took place on 13-14 October 2016, in Baku, Azerbaijan. This was an important workshop in view of Association of Black Sea/EaP countries to H2020. It functioned both as an informative meeting for ERANET/JPI schemes, as well as a networking event with EU M/S funding agencies in view of increasing the participation of Black Sea/EaP Countries in ongoing or forthcoming co-funding schemes.

Representatives of ERANETs and JPIs shared their experience with funding agencies from the Black Sea and EaP countries and discussed on modalities for participation; stages in the development of an ERA-NET/JPI that a country can be involved; necessary commitments for participation; assessment of perspectives for participation. 

PLATFORM was represented by Martin Greimel (BMLFUW, Austria), he participated in the workshop and gave a presentation about PLATFORM.

Training Course: Using Foresight in Public-Public-Partnerships, 20-21 February 2017, Vienna

ERA-LEARN 2020 offers the second training course on the application of foresight-processes for trans-national coordination of strategic research and innovation. The aim of this training course is to empower management structures of Public-Public-partnerships in their endeavor to develop, align and update their Strategic Research (and Innovation) Agendas in the trans-national context of Joint Programme Initiatives.

Registration will be open till 20 January 2017.

Analysis of ERA-NET Cofund actions under Horizon 2020 published


The first ERA-NET Cofund actions were evaluated by an expert group in view of the interim evaluation of Horizon 2020. The expert group was set up by the European Commission with the mandate to perform an assessment of the first ERA-NET Cofund actions with the purpose to take stock of the experiences in preparing and implementing ERA-NET Cofund, to identify critical issues that need to be addressed and if necessary propose adjustments, and to assess how the instrument can best contribute to the policy developments.

2nd Annual Report on P2P Partnerships (2016)

The 2nd  ERA-LEARN 2020 annual report on public-public (P2P) networks in Europe covers the 12 month period from July 2015 to the end of June 2016. It also aims to present the cumulative and emerging position on joint calls since the launch of the P2P movement in 2003 and provides a spotlight on the Cofund instrument, presenting a picture of the investment and results of the Cofunds to date. 

Ten JPIs present brochure and factsheets on Joint Programming

The ten JPIs present a brochure and factsheets on all JPIs. The new folder explains the benefits of participating in a Joint Programming Initiative, provides an overview of the governance model and highlights the implementation actions for transnational cooperation. In addition to the general introduction to Joint Programming all JPIs developed a factsheet with an overview of member countries, objectives and key achievements.

Under preparation: ERA-NET cofunds on forest-based bioeconomy and sustainable plant production

In 2014 the three forest-based ERA-NETs WoodWisdom-Net, FORESTERRA, and SUMFOREST came together with a focus on contributing to the European bioeconomy. Through their collaboration, the topic for an ERA-NET Cofund on “Innovative Forest-Based Bioeconomy” under Horizon 2020 was prepared.

The initiative is now preparing to submit a proposal to the “SFS-19-2016-2017: ERA-NET Cofund: Public-Public Partnerships in the bioeconomy” call under the topic “Innovative forest-based bioeconomy” (call deadline: 14 February 2017).

Another consortium is preparing a proposal for an ERA-NET Cofund of the second topic for 2017: Sustainable Plant Production.

News on Joint Calls

CORE Organic 2016 call is open

The CORE Organic Cofund consortium for the cofounded call consists of 25 partners from 19 countries and committed 13 million € of national funds “in cash” for transnational research.

The overall objective for the CORE Organic Cofund Call 2016 is that the proposed research projects support sustainable growth of the organic sector in Europe and beyond.

The call will follow a 2-step procedure. The closing date for submission of pre-proposals is scheduled for 1 March 2017, 10.00 CET.

ERA CoBioTech co-funded call 'Biotechnology for a sustainable bioeconomy' is open

ERA CoBioTech announces its co-funded call for transnational research projects in the field of biotechnologies. The co-funded call aims to contribute to transforming the global economy from a dependence on fossil raw material to a sustainable bio-based economy. With an indicative budget of approximately €36M ERA CoBioTech brings together 21 funding organisations from 18 countries. The call will follow a 2-step procedure with a closing date for pre-proposals on 02 March 2017, 13:00 CET.

Marine Biotechnology ERA-NET: third transnational call open' is open

The Marine Biotechnology ERA-NET announces the third transnational joint call titled “Metagenomic approaches for valorization from the marine environment”.

The 11 funding organisations involved in this call expect to support marine biotechnology research with an amount of 5.58 million €. The call targets research in marine microbes and their metagenomes, identifying new enzymes, metabolites, and metabolic pathways with biotechnological potential.

The submission of proposals will follow a one-step procedure and closes 7 March 2017, 15:00 CET.

SUSFOOD2 call for proposals will open 9 January and close 13 March, 2017

The ERA-Net SUSFOOD2 on SUStainable FOOD production and consumption will officially launch a co-funded call for research proposals on 9 January 2017 (submission deadline 13 March 2017). The scope of SUSFOOD covers the entire food supply chain with the main focus on food chain sustainability beyond the farm gate.

Pre-announcement of 2nd FACCE SURPLUS call for proposals

FACCE-JPI and FACCE SURPLUS pre-announce the upcoming call for joint research projects. The indicative total available budget amounts 7M€. The call is expected to open on 05 January 2017 with a closing date for pre-proposals on 07 March 2017.

The call aims to improve collaboration and cooperation across the European Research Area in the area of sustainable intensification of food and non-food biomass production and decentralised transformation systems, in particular small scale multi-input, multi-product biorefinery concepts.

News on upcoming and past events

CommBeBiz Bioeconomy Impact 2017, London, 21-22 February

The annual CommBeBiz annual event is designed to challenge, support and inform researchers on their quest to innovate in the commercial, social and policy arenas. Through keynote speakers and workshops, the event will aim to enhance key skills, (social media, IPR, PR, funding etc.) needed for the innovation process, and to provide a valuable networking opportunity and insights into innovation success stories and stumbling blocks, in the Bioeconomy.

Anyone with an interest in ensuring that current or future publicly-funded research has a meaningful impact on European society is welcome to attend. The CommBeBiz annual event is FREE to attend.

Seminar 'Bioenergy - from Research to Market Deployment in a European context', Stockholm, 14 June 2017

This seminar will take place in conjunction with the European Biomass Conference (EUBCE). Besides displaying exciting results from the bioenergy demonstration projects BioProGress and BioSNG as well as insights to the final outcomes of the ERA-NET Bioenergy projects on 'Small scale heat and power production', and on 'Biogas and energy crops', stakeholders are invited to hear the latest news of the new European Technology and Innovation Platform (ETIP) on Bioenergy as well as from the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA). An interactive session will make sure that their voice will be heard discussing the future developments in the bioenergy sector in Europe.

Presentations available Annual Joint Programming Conference 2016

The Annual Joint Programming Conference 2016, gathering almost 400 participants, focused on "Impacts of Public-Public Partnerships - expectations and experiences". The objective was to raise awareness and collect evidence of outcomes and impacts of P2Ps at European and national level. The results of the conference will contribute to the Horizon 2020 interim evaluation and to the preparation for the next Framework Programme.

There were parallel sessions on 'Impacts in the thematic context' and one of these was on SC2 Bioeconomy. This session included an introduction of the evolvement of P2P in Bioeconomy since FP6 by PLATFORM coordinator Christine Bunthof, followed by concrete practical examples of impact achieved, a panel discussion and an open discussion with the audience.

Presentations of the conference are available on the website of ERA-LEARN. The publication of the full conference report is expected in January 2017.

The Annual Joint Programming Conference 2017 will be held in Brussels on 7 and 8 November 2017.
