Trading Advice

IN THIS ISSUE

MPTT is a whānau that supports you right through your training and beyond. As an MPTT trainee, you get to learn from those who entered the industry before you and pass on your lessons to those who come after you.

This month, we share advice from construction veteran Mark Katterns on how to succeed in your trade, and welcome our new trainees into the fold. Plus, find out how becoming a Master Builder could be a great next step in your trades career.

Welcome to our new trainees

WHANAUNGATANGA DAY

More than 200 new trainees were welcomed into the MPTT whānau this month at our Whanaungatanga Day – a fun event where trainees meet each other, learn about the MPTT kaupapa and formally receive their scholarships.

Students came along from Unitec, Manukau Institute of Technology, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, NZMA and Oceania Career Academy. A big thanks to Unitec for hosting this great event.

We live-streamed parts of the day on Facebook so whānau and friends could get involved. Trainees learned the well-known He Honore waiata, followed by a multicultural haka. It was a powerful performance and a great team-building exercise, allowing trainees to work together and celebrate their culture.

Watch our tauira perform the MPTT haka and please share the video on social media. View all photos on Facebook.

Changes to trades training
UPDATE TO THE EDUCATION REFORM

After the government announced big changes to trades training in New Zealand, we went to workshops and consultations about the proposed plans and encouraged everyone involved to have their say.

After these discussions, we created a written response to the government’s plans, outlining our collective views and recommendations. As a consortium, we agree there is a need for reform. However, we don’t support all the details of the current proposal and we’ve emphasised the need for close consultation with Māori and Pacific communities. You can read the full document we submitted on our website.

Remember, if you’re studying or doing an apprenticeship, these changes won’t impact your training. MPTT continues to be 100% committed to supporting you to get certified and become a leader in the trades industry.
