Debrief | AustCham Myanmar Business Delegation to Chengdu and Kunming: April 23- 27 2019
On 23 April 2019 a delegation of 13 companies left Yangon, Myanmar headed to Chengdu and Kunming, China. Co-hosted by AustCham West China and supported by Austrade in each of Myanmar, Chengdu and Kunming, this delegation of Australian businesses and individuals from Myanmar to Western China was the first of its kind. AustCham Myanmar believes that the promotion of responsible trade and investment will provide direct, tangible and lasting benefits to Myanmar and China.
In Chengdu, Sichuan the delegation met with more than 70 key Chinese companies crossing all sectors including mining, infrastructure, power, transport and logistics, legal services, gems and jade, banking, oil and gas, tourism, agriculture, aquiculture, engineering and construction to name just a few. A productive business to business matching session followed individual delegation company presentations and an opportunity for deals to be done.
The delegation members also held a separate meeting with 7 senior members of the Sichuan Provincial Department of Commerce (including the Director General). This was an opportunity to hear first hand about the opportunities the officials see for the 3 way partnership of Australian and Chinese investment in Myanmar as well as for each delegate to describe their business and explain what they would like to achieve from the delegation. There was also an opportunity for the business delegation to tour the Urban Planning Centre in Chengdu- a masterpiece of city planning which sets the scene to guide Chengdu as one of China’s mega cities.
The delegation then moved on to Kunming, Yunnan Province, a key and growing source of trade and investment with Myanmar under the Belt and Road Initiative and a great opportunity for AustCham Myanmar delegates to meet with more than 40 Kunming based companies to discuss business opportunities in the region and in Myanmar. Interestingly many of the businesses the delegation met already had strong ties and businesses operating in the Myanmar market. Industries represented in this forum were construction, electrical cabling, legal services, fisheries, flowers and agriculture, mining, banking, engineering, power, logistics.
One of the highlights of the delegation was a meeting at the Yunnan Academy of Southeast Asian & South Asian Studies where a deep discussion was entered into around the opportunities for business the Belt Road Initiative will have for Australian businesses in Myanmar and China. The conversation was left open and both groups welcomed each other back for further discussion in the near future.
The meeting with the Yunnan Provincial Department of Commerce was a highlight of the delegations time in China as it provided an opportunity for some of the delegates to hold candid discussions around border crossing and transport issues pertinent to Yunnan and Myanmar. The high level of Yunnan Government attendees at this meeting meant that follow up conversations post-delegation have already occurred and are reaping rewards.
Finally, the Chamber recognises and appreciates the assistance provided by AustCham West China and Austrade in Myanmar, Kunming and Chengdu in organising this important delegation and trusts that it will form the basis of a strong and collaborative approach in Australian and Chinese companies doing business in Australia, China and Myanmar.
