Peep This Poet

Shauna Barbosa

Shauna and I are both fellows at the Writer’s Room of Boston, so we’ve been chillin and talking poems a lot. Her first collection, Cape Verdean Blues, is forthcoming from University of Pittsburgh Press in 2018. (I got a sneak peek at her manuscript and 👏 it 👏is 👏 dope!) Check out a poem of hers below.

**Boston-based homies: if you’re free this Wednesday night, catch Shauna in Somerville at Poets & Pints at Porter Square Books. Deets here.**

Self on the First Date

1.

You need the sun if you want to stop fast action. The sun wins every single time. The way it stands above you like everything is going as planned as thought how it shines on pregnant women on broken bikes and bones on unplanned pregnancies. I’m sweating underneath the same purple pleated skirt I got hit by a car in or collided with a car in or the sun opened its mouth blew me to the ground in. It looks different tonight. Some kind of photo grid meant to be read from right to left.

2.

And I keep telling the story of being hit by a car because I don’t know the name for not remembering if the driver had his blinker on. I couldn’t stop then I fell on the left side. In the street like that one so close to where I work a pregnant woman stops to ask if I’m okay. The shape of her stomach from the concrete view. A coffee mug.

Ima Read: Books I'm Reading 📚

We Are Only Taking What We Need and
No One Is Coming to Save Us
by Stephanie Powell Watts

I’ve really been feeling short story collections since K. Hill put me onto Toni Cade Bambara during our Gramma interview. I picked up We Are Only Taking What We Need by Stephanie Powell Watts after doing a quick google for short fiction by WOC. In the course of my recon I found out Watts’ debut novel No One Is Coming to Save Us was coming out this month. Of Watts, Electric Literature says “Stephanie Powell Watt’s debut novel follows a man returning home to North Carolina to pursue his high school sweetheart. Watts has described No One is Coming to Save Us as 'The Great Gatsby set in rural North Carolina, nine decades later, with desperate black people'; Edward P. Jones says it’s 'full of characters who come into a reader’s mind and heart and never leave.' ” Check out Watts’ work if you’re looking for a good read (then hit my line so we can talk about it!).
