What is the hive? What is Hive Hustle?
The hive started as our urban take on tiny living. A few years ago we culled our belongings down to a curated few and moved into a tiny apartment with one goal: create a space that unapologetically affirms our identities as black women, as radical educators, and as artists. The hive became a place where we could breathe. No roommates, no partners, no parents, no compromises. Soon we realized we weren’t the only ones who needed breathing room. These are dangerous times to be in a black body, a queer body, a woman’s body. Homies came through to kick it, create, and be in community. It became common knowledge that if you could hear hip-hop from the sidewalk and smell incense from our stoop, one of us was at the hive grinding. Our apartment became a place for small yoga classes, writing groups, co-working sessions and so much more. We wondered, what would it look like if we grew the hive beyond our apartment? What would it take for us to run programming?
Earlier in 2016 we began facilitating wellness/life design workshops for various organizations and community groups. Now we’re soft-launching Hive Hustle, the lifestyle arm of Whole Soul Health Co., aimed at creating life design resources for scrappy millennials and creatives of color. The #BossUp Workbook is a collection of worksheets we’ve used in the past, plus a few new resources that cover some foundational topics we discuss in our work. It’s designed to be printed and worked through one section per week starting on a Monday, but you do you. While we pulled this information together and designed this resource, we deff didn’t invent these ideas or this research. If you want more information on these topics or to see the original sources, check out the resource page in the back. Lastly, we’re real people! Feel free to hit us up with questions, comments, and feedback. Hive Hustle has more in store for the upcoming months. Stay tuned!
