Dear Friends & Followers,

We have some rad updates for you in this newsletter, including an opportunity for YOU to be part of Ian's next big project, so let's get right into it!

Website Re-Launch

We are thrilled to announce a complete overhaul to Ian's website. We brushed up on our technical skills and dove right into putting together a sleek portfolio for you to peruse. Check it out at and let us know what you think!

As part of the new shiny website, we're also introducing a blog to keep you up to date on Ian's shows, press, and other happenings. Check out the blog here.

Mass MoCA Residency

Tomorrow Ian will be beginning a two-week residency at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in North Adams, MA. MASS MoCA is a fantastic museum and their relatively new residency program is a truly exciting opportunity. If you've been looking for an excuse to make a trip there, now you have one. Ian will be there through September 29th.

This residency will be spent working in a new direction. Ever since Ian started making his Strange Histories series of collaged 35mm slides back in 2013, he has wanted to showcase the images in book format. But not just any old artist book. He wanted to make a story book using his surreal slide collages. And rather than write it himself, he thought it would be more fun to let others write the stories instead and transform it into a collaborative project. Strangers took the photos, Ian collaged them, and friends will infuse the narrative with their own imagination. Together we will create even Stranger Histories.

In anticipation of the MASS MoCA resdiency, Ian has been working with fellow artists, art collectors, and friends to create close to 20 stories. The results are wonderful and we can't wait to share them with you. But be patient, we want to collect more stories first, and then dive into book design and production. But now the ball is really rolling, so expect to hear more as the project progresses.

Story Contest!

We've got a surprise for you all. Up until now, Ian has only been asking people who have collected his slide viewer collages to contribute to the book project, but that's about to change. Want a chance to be part of the Strange Histories storybook? We're opening the doors.

The ask is simple: Take a good look at the collage below and write a 1-4 paragraph short story or story excerpt inspired by that image. Interpret it however you like, there's no right or wrong answer.

Deadline is September 29 (the last day of Ian's residency).

We will be reviewing submissions and would like to try to include at least one story that we receive into the book and publish it as a blog post. Submit your story to: We can't wait to read what you come up with.

Project Vortex

Several of Ian's creations are now featured on the Project Vortex website. The site is a collective of artists and designers who work primarily with plastic diverted from the waste stream. A portion of all sales made through the website go to local beach clean-up efforts, and Ian has agreed to donate 50% of any sales to the Friends of Casco Bay organization.
