Lunchtime Lecture: “Nineteenth Century Louisiana Portraits, Photographs and Paintings”
Wednesday, December 2nd at Noon
The West Baton Rouge Museum presents a Lunchtime Lecture featuring Mr. Eugene Groves, entitled “Nineteenth Century Louisiana Portraits, Photographs and Paintings” on December 2nd at noon. The lecture complements the exhibition, The Portrait, the Artist, and the Patron: 19th Century Portraiture in Louisiana. Mr. Groves explains, “Louisiana is rich in its trove of talented artists and famous patrons. Some of the finest artists in America lived or worked in Louisiana during their illustrious careers. The friction between paintings and early photographs evidenced itself in Louisiana as it did across the country, through the nineteenth century.” Mr. Groves will discuss how portrait painting was impacted by the discovery and evolution of photography. He will show a selection of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes and cdv’s to help illustrate the impact of photography on the painted portraits during the second half of the nineteenth century.
