Ken Fitzgerald - "A Photographic Passion for Trains!"

Speaker at the monthly club meeting on June, 1st 2020

Ken began his lifelong passion for railroads in 1960 at the age of five while spending his summers in Sweetwater, Texas riding Trains at the Santa Fe yard. Taking a photography course at age 12 allowed him to start capturing the railroad’s people, operations, equipment and character for historical purposes.

Since that time his photography has appeared in many different railroad magazines, books and calendars. He also authored the books “Dallas Then and Now” in 2014 and “Train Stations Then and Now” in 2017 along with doing the principal photography for the Houston, San Antonio, Austin and “Texas Then and Now” books. He has also produced several other photo books of his work that were written as internal publications for different railroad companies.

Today Ken works as a full-time photographer in the railroad industry. In 2019 alone he documented several major railroad engineering projects; the startup of the DFW TEXRail commuter service; the operation of Union Pacific’s “Big Boy” steam locomotive across south Texas; the CSX Santa Train as celebrity Marty Stuart’s personal photographer; and BNSF’s Holiday Express across the Pacific Northwest. Ken is also a model railroader and locomotive horn collector.

While having paid his dues over the years documenting the usual weddings and real estate, at the end of the day Ken Fitzgerald would rather be remembered for his railroad photography. If there is one subject you are knowledgeable about, consider using your skills with a camera to be in the right place at the right time to record definitive images. Ken will share his favorite train-related photos and how he applied this thought to capture and record moments in history.

You do not need to resize them. If you do resize your large photos, the long side should be at least 1920 pixels in order to fill the screen.

Please send your files to Photos@TheWoodlandsCameraClub.org

At the meeting, briefly please tell us
(1) why you chose these photos,
(2) where you took them, and
(3) mention any special camera or editing techniques that you used.

Remember: This is not a contest. We are not looking for professional shots. We just want to get to know you better through your pictures!

Weekly Photo Challenge

The "Activities Group" of Gerri, Kathy and Richard is offering a new weekly challenge on our Facebook page!

They will provide you an opportunity to showcase your creative and artistic side using a single RAW file provided to the group. This weekly image will vary from landscape, wildlife, portraits or …
Everyone has their own editing style and utilizes various software applications to achieve their desired results. Some of us only use Lightroom while others utilize the Photoshop software or their various add-ons, Luminar, Aurora, Topaz, Masking etc. Using your preferred method, we are asking you to download the weekly RAW image then share your final image for all to see along with a short (50-100 word) comment about why and how you developed your final image along with the software utilized.
Similar to Don Reuter’s 50-day challenge from March, April & May 2020, please do not start a new post just add your image and comments to the specific weekly challenge post.

You don’t need to be a pro to do this! Just have fun playing with each photo and seeing what miracles you can produce!

miniSIG Nikon Z Mirrorless

Our "mini SIG" group of TWCC members using Nikon Z mirrorless cameras (Z50, Z6, Z7) have continued to meet on Zoom during the current restrictions.

Our 10 members join virtually as we discuss camera settings, lens choices, and other useful information. We will continue to meet virtually at least monthly to learn more about our specific cameras.

Each month many TWCC members share their knowledge and time both informally and formally as “mentors” to other club members. It may be by e-mail, phone, or even in person at different locations around The Woodlands.

Learning from a friend or neighbor is one of the best experiences in a club like ours. To see who’s available to help you grow your photo skills visit

About Us

Our Purpose

is to bring together people interested in exploring the wonder of God’s creation through the lens of a camera. Members of all ages encourage one another and share their efforts to record nature, travels, people and memories. Anyone is welcome to join this club. We are here to teach one another through enjoyable activities and meetings, to make new friendships through a common interest, to support The Woodlands United Methodist Church through our photography, and to glorify God through it all.

Meeting Information

The first Monday of each month (except holidays), Aldersgate Hall at the southeast end of The Woodlands United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Grogan’s Mill and Lake Woodlands Drive. We start gathering around 6:45; the meeting starts promptly at 7:10.

The Woodlands United Methodist Church
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.

Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Matthew 6
