Smiley Pool - Senior Staff Photographer for the Dallas Morning News

Speaker at the monthly club meeting on July, 6th 2020

Since the mid 1980's, photojournalist Smiley Pool has been collecting images that capture the critical stories of our time and the memorable moments in individual peoples lives.

A native Texan who was born in Galveston, Smiley returned to The Dallas Morning news in late 2014 after serving as the chief photographer and photo coach in his second stint at the Houston Chronicle. Currently he serves as the Senior Staff Photographer there. He has also worked for Colorado Springs Gazette and Austin American Statesman.

Smiley has covered the travels and funeral of Pope John Paul II, ten Olympic games, professional sporting events like the Super Bowl and NBA finals, visiting dignitaries and presidential inaugurations, and many other major local, national and international news events.

He was a key contributor to the Dallas Morning News’ coverage of Hurricane Katrina, which won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography. He is a seven-time winner of the National Press Photographers Association regional photographer of the year award, as well as numerous other local, state and national awards.

At the meeting, briefly please tell us
(1) why you chose these photos,
(2) where you took them, and
(3) mention any special camera or editing techniques that you used.

Remember: This is not a contest. We are not looking for professional shots. We just want to get to know you better through your pictures!

Composition SIG Meeting

We will be covering "Creativity, Inspiration, and most of all, Fun with Photography!" in the composition SIG on sunday July 12th.

We may have many things in common when it comes to photography. However, it is that special mix of how we see, how we explore and our unique personalities that makes every photo different! Let's see what creative and expressive differences make every photograph just a little bit different!

Processing Your Photos SIG Meeting

Did you get the June 2020 Major Updates to Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, but don’t really know what changed, or how to use the new tools?
Did you know you can create and share Lightroom Galleries as part of your Creative Cloud subscription?
And did you know that your Creative Cloud subscription gives you access to a “gazillion” free Photoshop brushes that can supercharge your texture blending and other creative projects?
For answers, explanations, elaborations and exceptional examples, "ZOOM" in at 7:00 pm (or a little earlier) to the July 20 Post Processing SIG.

miniSIG Nikon Z Mirrorless

Our "mini SIG" group of TWCC members using Nikon Z mirrorless cameras (Z50, Z6, Z7) have continued to meet on Zoom during the current restrictions.

Our 10 members join virtually as we discuss camera settings, lens choices, and other useful information. We will continue to meet virtually at least monthly to learn more about our specific cameras.

If you are shooting with a Nikon Z camera or know someone else who is, let us know. We’d love for you or your friend to join our group!

Weekly Photo Challenge

The "Activities Group" of Gerri, Kathy and Richard is offering a new weekly challenge on our Facebook page!

They will provide you an opportunity to showcase your creative and artistic side using a single RAW file provided to the group. This weekly image will vary from landscape, wildlife, portraits or …
Everyone has their own editing style and utilizes various software applications to achieve their desired results. Some of us only use Lightroom while others utilize the Photoshop software or their various add-ons, Luminar, Aurora, Topaz, Masking etc. Using your preferred method, we are asking you to download the weekly RAW image then share your final image for all to see along with a short (50-100 word) comment about why and how you developed your final image along with the software utilized.
Similar to Don Reuter’s 50-day challenge from March, April & May 2020, please do not start a new post just add your image and comments to the specific weekly challenge post.

You don’t need to be a pro to do this! Just have fun playing with each photo and seeing what miracles you can produce!

Happy 4th of July!

Wishing y'all a very happy and blessed independence day!
I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from?

My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber;

indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD watches over you— the LORD is your shade at your right hand;

the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life;

the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

Psalm 121
