Dear Autism Families,
As 2015 comes to an end, we at AIM would like to reflect on our busy year and also give you a glimpse of what we are working on for the future. As usual, we have all been busy with our personal lives, but we remain focused and committed to our mission. This past year we worked hard to promote our medical alert bracelets and keychains. These are designed to assist parents and patients to have a comprehensive medical history reference at their fingertips and, in an emergency, to provide health care providers with vital information.

AIM participated as presenters at the Give Autism a Chance Conference in Austin, TX with a fantastic panel discussion preparing parents and professionals for autism in the Emergency Room. For free downloadable references and handouts pertaining to these topics please click HERE. In July, the Houston Abilities Expo invited AIM for a wonderful opportunity to host an information table allowing us to meet many parents, children, and providers to discuss the medical issues underlying the Autism diagnosis. We also presented on accessing healthcare and advocating for appropriate medical treatment. You can find our presentation linked on our website.

This year we expanded our website and added valuable reference and will continue to expand with our new format coming in the new year. AIM continues to coordinate with other organizations in promoting parental rights, equal access to healthcare, appropriate diagnosis, and patient focused care as the standard of practice model for all children and adults diagnosed on the autism spectrum.
Let’s talk about our 2016 Initiatives!!
  • This year we are excited to announce the addition of Tina Higens, long time AIM mom in our parent support group, who will join us as our Patient Resource Specialist. Tina has a wealth of knowledge in traversing the healthcare system, advocating for her own children, and accessing resources available to make that happen. Look for our focus on Tina in this newsletter for more information. Welcome!!!
  • Also new will be our formatting. We will focus on our website as a base of resource information for parents of children on the spectrum, adults on the spectrum, health care providers, therapists, teachers and education specialists. The same reliable information will be presented all in one place and we will move away from our Meetup format. Weekly Facebook updates with useful tips, new studies, instructional and informational articles and blogs will be coming to you!!!! Be sure to sign up for our newsletters !
  • Our 2016 Awareness Campaign will be designed to highlight the urgent need for MEDICAL educational materials for parents and professionals within the Emergency Department setting. It will focus on access to delivery of appropriate medical diagnostic and treatment interventions using the patient centered care model.
  •  Our AIM Emergency Room Tool Kit will be here in the first quarter of the year! We are committed to providing the most comprehensive tools to parents, patients, and healthcare providers to reach this goal and we are currently developing these materials. Access to these useful tools will be available on the website as free downloads for parents and health care providers.
  • This year we will develop a Professional Portal featured webpage which will provide access to evidence based practice reference, current practice recommendations, leading research, diagnostic tools, assessment guidelines and highlight common practice pitfalls to avoid. We actively seek professional partners and work all year to coordinate with health care professionals in all settings.
These are just some of the exciting new developments we are working on as we continue our commitment to support a comprehensive interdisciplinary medical model focused on underlying pathophysiology, appropriate treatments, equal access to healthcare, and standards of care surrounding this medically complex patient population.

Please do not forget to share our website with your friends, family, coworkers, and medical team. We thank you for your continued support and hope each one of you has a wonderful holiday season and a blessed 2016!
