Creative play or playful creativity?

We’ve been thinking a lot recently about the relationship between play and creativity. They're clearly not the same things, but they have lots in common and, in combination, can be a powerful and transformative force.

We often use both words when we’re describing our workshops because creativity encourages people to play, as much as play encourages creativity.

Play and playfulness can stimulate creativity, often in new and unexpected ways. And doing something creative – anything that uses the imagination – can unlock the playful part of us that many other activities can’t reach. But not all acts of creativity are playful, by any means. If we are focussed on an outcome, on ‘getting it right’, then that can become all that it’s about. So sometimes it can help to change our expectations and just let it be about the process - the materials, the freedom of experimentation, the sense of connection.

So, unlike a regular art or craft workshop, nobody got to take anything home from our first create&connect workshop last week. Everything went back in the ‘box’. We worked – or played – on the basis that if we knew from the outset that everything we created was only temporary and ephemeral, we’d worry less about getting it ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ and just get stuck in. And that’s exactly what happened, and it was a delight to watch as ribbons and scarves and scraps of material became a rich landscape of sea and mountains, and then returned to a heap of fabric.

"There are two things which make this event irresistible - it's always a really good laugh, and there's no pressure at all to join in. It's amazing to watch something come to life out of the most minimal cues. I had no idea it would be so funny and so clever! Highly recommended." Jacky, Otley
