Laura Ingalls Wilder thought highly of her mother, as she shares with us in this poem “Mother, A Magic Word.” And many of you felt a strong personal connection to Ma Ingalls as well, whether it was to the character in the books or to Karen Grassle’s performance in the TV show. Today we are celebrating all of these beloved qualities in a new article, 10 Things Ma Ingalls Taught Us About Life. Which of her lessons have you taken to heart?

Did you know that De Smet, South Dakota is the setting for almost the entire second half of the Little House books? If you are planning a trip to visit the Little House on the Prairie historic sites and locations, you will surely end up in De Smet. Sandra Hume gives us a head start on planning our visit with “Six Can’t-Miss Things to Do and See in De Smet, South Dakota.” And for more great tips check out her brand new book, mentioned in the post.

Did you know that Laura Ingalls Wilder was not the first writer in her family? Her great grandfather Samuel Worthen Ingalls was known as “The Unlearned Poet” throughout the western New York region where he lived. See how his poems compare to the poetic prose of his great-granddaughter Laura in this fascinating comparison. Both were interested in capturing the character of their home regions, the impact of the natural world, and the effects of hardship on the human spirit.
