AIA Wichita Design Studio
As part of AIA Wichita’s ongoing efforts to further the profession in Wichita, we have partnered with Kansas State University to sponsor a year long 5th year studio focusing on Wichita. Our goal is to continue our support of future architects and showcase the community of professionals in Wichita. The studio will be learning about the downtown plan and studying three of the catalyst sites as possible locations for their projects. AIA Wichita board and studio committee members spent September 6th and 7th introducing the students to the city. Events included a presentation of the downtown plan by WDDC, visits to the project sites, firm visits, architectural tours and social receptions.
Throughout the fall semester, students will further their site analysis, develop a project program and explore large scale detail and prototyping using stone and steel. Future trips to Wichita are planned for the fall and spring as well to gain the students more exposure to the city. Also, studio committee members will travel to Manhattan at several times throughout the year to provide feedback and guidance as the projects are developed.
K-State architecture students were in Wichita on December 10th for a gallery style critique, hosted by GLMV Architecture. Design professionals from Wichita area firms donated their time to review the students' progress and to give insightful feedback. Thank you to all those who volunteered for this event!
There will be more opportunities to get involved during the spring semester. Reach out to Malcolm Watkins if you would like to make an investment in the next generation of architects.
The Emerging Professionals of AIA Wichita hosts an ARE Study Group which meets once a month from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Study sessions are free and special guest speakers will be presenting each month. Visit us online to find more details. You don't want to miss. Link: ARE Study Sessions
