Star Trek: The Motion Picture turns 35!

Yes, Star Trek the Motion picture, one of the most anticipated Science Fiction films of the 1970s opened this week 35 years ago. Just in case you didn’t feel old today.

The film, while financially successful wasn’t the merchandising boon that Mego had earlier with the original series.

To quote the late Neal Kublan, former Mego Vp of Research and Design “The biggest downer I ever had at Mego was the night we went to the premiere of Star Trek and walked out and said “Well, kiss forty million goodbye”.”

While the merchandise didn’t do great, if you were nine years old (like me!) it was a heck of a fun ride, a new Marvel comic was launched, McDonalds did Star Trek happy meals and well, then there were the Mego toys.

So happy 35^th anniversary to nobody’s favourite Star Trek movie, we still love you!

Will the Rigellian please stand up?

It's known among Trek fans that Mego actually got some names mixed up and it got past Paramount licensing. The figure that Mego released as a Rigellian was actually a Saurian (of the brandy fame) The real Rigellians are on the left.

As cool as the Rigellian figure is, I can't sleep at night thinking I got denied a "space bird turtle man" action figures!

Speaking of Saurian, this madly wonderfully custom was made by our own Dave Mc (and it's one of the few 8 inch customs of any TMP characters i could find, surprising!) Dave channelled the Mego aliens line and gave the Rigellian a wild, completely non cannon out for. Love it!

Alienated

While wave two of Star Trek the Motion Picture figures were abandoned by Mego, the company did have to fufill it's obligations to department stores like JC Penny who put the aliens in their Christmas wishbook that year. So, some of the aliens made it into the states in mailer boxes (and very small quantities)

Thanks to them paying by letter of credit, Mego distributors in Canada, Italy and the UK got carded second series figures to sell.

Who says "Retro" has to mean "soft likeness"? With the revolution of 3 3/4" figures right now, it's important that we take a look again at this again, a beautifully detailed Klingon prototype (sculpted at twice it's size) by industry legend Bill Lemmon. Cochise on a Kresge card is a somewhat more affordable scenario than a Kresge Green Arrow, he was had for $105.

Tardis stands for Time and Relative Dimensions in Space and this nice boxed version of the Mego Denys Fisher time machine went for $250 last month.

Whoa! this Mexican boxed Ape Throne fetched $410 last month, I used to own one of these!

These guys look familiar

When AMT/ERTL pitched a series of action figures for 1984's "Stark Trek 3 : The Search for Spock" they not only gave away the film's ending (there he is!) but used Mego ST:TMP figures as their prototypes.

They did end up sculpting new figures for the final release however.
