This Mother's Day, Give in Honor or Memory of a Special Adult in Your Life

This Mother’s Day, consider making a donation to the Spoke Village(s) of your choice in honor or memory of a special older adult in your life, and Support the "Best New Non-Profit in Portland"! Your generosity will help bring Villages to mothers, fathers, grandmothers, and grandfathers throughout the Portland metro-area, enabling them to remain in the homes they love.

Watch Villages NW supporter Holly Pruett’s video. She knows the importance of Villages, not just for her parents, but for herself and other adult children trying to juggle the challenges of aging parents, growing children, and busy careers.

Focus Groups Planned
Share Your Thoughts and Opinions

Villages NW is the parent of North Star Village and six other Villages in the greater Portland metro area.  The recipient of the Portland Monthly 2015 Best New NonProfit Light a Fire Award, Villages NW is our very own local nonprofit dedicated to helping older adults live in their homes with autonomy, for as long as possible, through community and peer support.

Your thoughts and opinions are important to us!  Villages NW is
seeking people to participate in two 1.5 hour focus groups.  You will be given a very brief introduction to Villages NW (It’s not a sales pitch, just a chance to tell you who we are). Then you will bd asked to fill out a brief written survey. Finally, we’ll ask your thoughts and opinions on the language and images we may use to attract people like you to our cause.

The 2016 Older Americans Month theme is Blaze a Trail. Visit the OAM microsite for materials and ideas to help you celebrate.

When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday.  About a third of older Americans lived in poverty, and there were few programs to meet their needs.

Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing.  A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the national council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as "Senior Citizens Month," the prelude to "older Americans Month."

Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities.

Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs, and other such activities.  On Wednesday, the Portland City Council will pass a proclamation in honor of Older Americans Month.

A Dangerous Health Problem No One Talks About

The risk increases with age, but there are ways to prevent it

By Linda Melone, CSCS  Health & Wellness Blogger, NextAvenue.com

You’re sitting down to enjoy a nice steak at your favorite restaurant, maybe sipping a little wine. Suddenly a piece of meat gets stuck in your throat. It’s not enough to block your breathing, so you’re not quite choking —but you also can’t get it down. You excuse yourself and go to the restroom, hoping you can dislodge the food by either coughing it up, inducing vomiting or drinking water.

Called “steakhouse syndrome,” this common scenario can lead to death if you take matters into your own hands this way, says Dr. Robert Glatter, emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital, N.Y., and assistant professor at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine.    READ MORE
