North Star Village Enthusiast Steps Up as Planning Team Chair

Anjala Ehelebe, Woodlawn neighborhood activist and Village enthusiast has taken the reins of the North Star Village Planning Team.  An aging-in-place Village has been a long-time dream for her since she read about the first Village in Beacon Hill, Boston, in 2001.
"The promise of a virtual Village is to give you a community of friends and volunteers to help you live happily and safely in your house as long as you want to," says the new chair."  Click here to read more.

Pay It Forward!

Share Your Skills & Join the North Star Team

North Star Village is now in its second year of developing a strong foundation upon which our future virtual Village will rest.  That future is coming up fast—Fall, 2017—and we need more hands to share the workload.  Here are three areas where our immediate need is greatest:

Website Re-design—Help us modernize the "look and feel" of the North Star website.  If you are familiar with web or e-media design, and can work independently as well as collaboratively, we want to hear from you!  We already have a stable web design host with many sophisticated templates that do not require coding experience.  In fact, we prefer to keep it simple so that our website content can be easily updated by volunteers.

Writer & Media Relations—Your writing and media skills will be put to good use preparing articles and developing contacts with local print and broadcast media.  We know that many older adults living within the North Star service area are intrigued with the idea of a neighbor-helping-neighbor service that will help them age at home and remain independent.  Your help in increasing North Star 's visibility and community presence is one way we can reach those who may benefit from our services.

Volunteer Coordinator—A special position for the person who likes helping other volunteers find their niche within the different task teams which are moving our Village towards Fall 2017.  You are good at organizing, keeping in touch with our valued volunteers and making sure that each task team's volunteer needs are met.

And that's not all!

Check out the North Star Village Task Teams on our website.  You may just find the perfect match for your skills and the joy of working with like-minded folks who are passionate about making our Village a reality !

If any of these positions sound like you or if you have questions, please contact
Patt Opdyke at 503-978-0540 or  northstarvillage@comcast.net.

Words from North Star's
Founding Chair, Patt Opdyke

When I first heard of the Village Movement, I knew that I had found an essential cornerstone for planning my “tomorrow” and staying put in my well-loved home and garden.  It was as if all of the directions my professional life had taken—community organizing, citizen involvement, community education, project management, communications—had prepared me for this next step.
"What matters to me is connecting with others, engaging in activities enjoyed in the presence of friends and making a difference.

"North Star Village satisfies these needs and more.  It offers a way I can “pay it forward” so when the time comes for me to rely on the kindness of others, I will have the satisfaction of knowing that I have been part of a team responsible for creating a beautiful solution for aging in place with dignity, grace and peace of mind."

Overcoming Social Isolation in Your 60s and 70s

Everyone thinks that illnesses are the scariest things that you have to face as you get a little older. While cancer and Alzheimer’s are undoubtedly terrifying, there is a force that many women our age fear even more – social isolation.

I don’t say this lightly. Nor do I want to diminish the suffering that women with serious illnesses go through. I’m simply saying that social isolation has the potential to impact every aspect of our lives, from our ability to fight disease to our happiness and sense of purpose in life.

Social isolation is also an aspect of life after 60 that we don’t like to talk about. Unlike physical challenges, which are acceptable topics for conversation, loneliness and social isolation are more taboo. It’s almost as if, deep down, we blame ourselves for not having more people in our lives. Or, perhaps we fear that this is how others will see us, if we share our feelings.  READ MORE
