Stay up to date on all things Pando
This year, expect to see Pandomaniacs growing up all over the place!
The Kiewit family
In 2015, John Cobb asked what civilization might look like if it were rethought with the Earth in mind.

Some 2,000 people came to Pomona College to engage in the process of rethinking everything – from more than 80 different perspectives.

In 2016, we will help bring big ideas about the shape of an ecological future down to Earth on specific urban lots (for proof of concept).  Then use the model to change the world.

We call this initiative, Pando Hubs.

Here’s what’s been happening:
A Pando Hubs strategy session was recently held at Los Angeles City Hall with academic, art and design, faith, business, community and government leaders and offered resounding support for our vision of creating a network of Hubs to strengthen the connective tissue between organizations and nurture them.  The meeting was hosted by Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Koretz.  John B. Cobb, Jr. chaired.

In addition, local community meetings from the South Bay to the San Fernando Valley, and from Claremont to Venice have been held to further develop the Pando Hubs concept and strategy, with on-the-ground input.  Strong support is developing.

Many voted online for our LA2050 bid for initial Pando Hubs underwriting support.  While we made a good showing, our friends at Heal the Bay were among those who garnered the most votes.  Strong spin-off and collaborative opportunities have arisen for us as a result of this effort, however, which we are currently exploring.
What to expect over the next few weeks:
Design and marketing legend John Bielenberg will lead members of the Pando Hubs team through his signature “Blitz” to ready us for a launch this spring.  Bielenberg has done similar work for some of the most distinguished corporate, government, and non-profit clients in the world, including the White House and Al Gore’s climate initiative.

Senior fundraising advisor Jim Looney will help guide a professional fundraising campaign to support Pando Populus and collaborative Hub initiatives.  Jim is a giant in the industry, with strong connections to the Claremont community (he once headed development for Claremont Graduate University and served as Secretary of the Board).  We are honored with his involvement.

Some 15-20 Hubs will be chosen to participate in the Pando Hubs initial launch, including places like:

  • A high school with an Earth-centered curriculum.
  • A homeless shelter experimenting with micro housing and gardens.
  • A business firm that tracks more than 10,000 environmental and human-related cost factors in every product.
  • A university sustainability program experimenting with new ways of living.
  • An intentional community of women of faith aiming to incorporate planetary concerns with social justice.
  • An experimental program that aims to reimagine public library buildings and lands as places of ecological education and urban farming.
  • Other locations of next-generation thinking and action.
What we need:
We are currently staffing up, looking for volunteers to join our extraordinary team of highly-talented people, especially with expertise in:
  • Creative writing – who can help keep our online contributions strong (blog, social media, website);
  • Project management – a critical function as we expect to connect and nurture a network of Hubs in Southern California and develop sustainable systems;
  • Fundraising/proposal writing/tracking – as we seek to develop a firm foundation.
If you have talents and time to lend in creating a more ecological civilization, let us know!  Write:  Eugene@pandopopulus.com.

Stay tuned!  We have an extraordinary year ahead!
