Come, join us!

More than 40 faith-based, environmental, social justice, civic, business, and educational leaders from southern California will come together on the day of Pope Francis’ address to the United Nations to describe their own responses to climate change and other critical issues related to the planet.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is hosted by the USC Office of Religious Life and sponsored by Pando Populus.

Philosophical theologian John B. Cobb, Jr. will state that “this pope is Pando.”

Eugene Shirley will describe Pando Populus’ ambitions to identify and foster ecological innovation across Southern California.

Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Koretz will announce, “Decade:  Climate Safe (2016-2025),” a new decade-long climate emissions reduction initiative aimed at grassroots and neighborhood efforts.

The Rt. Rev. Mary Glasspool, Bishop Suffragan of the L.A. Episcopal Diocese, will lead the proceedings.

She and leaders of more than 40 organizations will describe their own responses to the issues highlighted by the pope.  They also hope to direct attention to the upcoming UN Conference of the Parties in Paris, in Dec. 2015, which will work for an international climate change agreement.

For Our Common Home
Edited by John B. Cobb, Jr. and Ignacio Castuera

Focused on the pope’s recent encyclical, Laudato Si’, FOR OUR COMMON HOME includes a forward by Bill McKibben and chapters by leading and original thinkers like Vandana Shiva, Philip Clayton, and Mary Evelyn Tucker – many of whom were a part of the “Seizing an Alternative” conference.
Gary Dorrien writes: “Everything about this volume is extraordinary— the global ecological emergency it addresses, the gift of a remarkable papal encyclical on this subject, the compelling and astute responses gathered herein, and the tremendous work of planning and imagination that produced the book—the great Whitehead International Conference extravaganza of June 2015.”

The book is published by Process Century Press and is available here.
