Healthy Information: Enabling Healthy Communities through I&R
In beautiful London at the Ivey Spencer Leadership Centre
More than 60 attendees participated in 15+ workshops which covered topics from Indigenous competency training for organizations and individual agency staff to health literacy in I&R. Currently available presentations are now on the InformOntario website.
During the InformOntario Annual General Meeting, the recipients of our first 2 Symposium bursaries were announced. The $250 bursary winners were Information Orillia and Social Planning Council of Kitchener-Waterloo.
If you attended the 2-day event, then please complete our post-event survey“here”. If you were unable to attend, we’d also like to know why, so please complete our short “I missed it” survey.
The annual dinner featured the host of CBC’s Spark Radio Program – Nora Young – who looked at the pros, and some dark cons, of our society’s reliance on digital technology.
Our special thanks goes to IO member - thehealthline.ca Information Network - for hosting this year’s event, and their team which worked with the planning committee to create and execute an outstanding and informative education and training symposium.
We especially want to say a huge thank you to Jennifer Jones from thehealthline.ca Information Network; we could not have done it without all of your dedication and hard work.

“Extract of Ontario Non Profit Network May 15, 2015 notice about Community Hubs”
The Premier of Ontario recently appointed Karen Pitre as Special Advisor to Chair a Premier’s Community Hub Framework Advisory Group. Their mandate is to review provincial policies and develop a framework for identifying areas where the province can support local efforts to create community hubs.
To get a broad range of perspectives, the Advisory Group (which includes those with nonprofit experience) will review extensive research and existing examples, and consult with community groups and other partners. The ideas they gather will inform the government's approach to assist with the evolution of community hubs.
ONN knows - and we’re glad the Advisory Group knows this too - that they need to hear from nonprofits about the successful hub models already flourishing, and what’s important for this strategy moving forward. That’s why ONN is working with Karen and the Advisory Group to help compile lessons and context from nonprofits we know are engaged in community hubs - and have been for years.
We designed this in-depth survey with Karen’s office to help nonprofits get their voices heard.
The results of the survey will go directly to the government, as well as to ONN’s policy team, and we’ll each be doing analysis. Based on the survey results and other perspectives we hear through the network, ONN will also be making a formal submission with a sector-wide lens. ONN’s submission will focus on the principles for community hubs and the partnership approach between governments and nonprofits that will be key to a successful strategy. We’ll also be listening for what the nonprofit sector can do together to support the development and resilience of community hubs.
Please share with your networks, too, so they can share their perspectives!
