Connecting You To Our Community

July 2019

Your Voice Matters

One of the greatest pleasures for me as an MLA is taking the time to visit neighbourhoods, knock on doors and personally meet the people I represent.
Now that the legislative work in the House of Assembly has been completed for another session, I am pleased to have the opportunity to visit your neighbourhood and meet with constituents to hear your thoughts and the issues that matter the most to you.  Thanks to the many who have already welcomed me and for the many great conversations.   Oh, sorry for occasionally waking the napping dogs in the neighbourhood on these hot summer days!

Celebrating a Milestone

It was an honour to be invited to the graduation ceremony to recognize and celebrate the special milestone of the students from Sir John A Macdonald and Halifax West High Schools.

Best wishes to all of the graduates on the success you have achieved and enjoy the start of another chapter in your life as you pursue new dreams, goals and aspirations.

Mountain Bike Park and Yoga Classes

New Additions at Brunello

More reasons to love where you live!

As a strong supporter of sports, outdoor activity, and healthy lifestyles, I am delighted our community can add a Mountain Bike Park and Yoga classes to the list of outdoor activities and amenities available for our community to enjoy.
On July 13th  Brunello opened phase one of a Mountain Bike Trail and Skills Park.  The trail currently consists of approximately 5 kms of trails that wind through a beautiful forested landscape.  The Mountain Bike Park offers a variety of elevations and train to suit beginner to advanced skill levels.  An extension of 10 to 15 additional kms will be added to the park in the next phase of the project.  Dust off your bikes and hit the trails!

Or, enjoy the tranquil landscape and outdoor experience of yoga classes every Wednesday 9:30 - 10:30 am on the deck overlooking the Links.

A walk in the Park

The fresh air, sweets scents of flowers and trees, the warmth of the sunlight peeking through the leaves and the soothing sound of the birds singing are some of the comforts the forest has to offer.  The benefits of being out in nature go well beyond just comfort and offer a myriad of health benefits for people of all ages.
I believe by introducing children to the love of the forest at an early age will keep them connected to nature and the outdoors for a lifetime.  That’s why I was eager to connect the Roots and Boots Forest School Society program to the Jerry Lawrence Park located in Lewis Lake.

The program founded by two Nova Scotia moms with specialized training in managing children outdoors guides and supports the learning of young children in a safe, natural, and unstructured environment in the forest. The participants learn to respect our environment, learn important skills for surviving in the wilderness, and learn to be aware of potential dangers.

Hiking, snacks, and rest periods to enjoy the forest’s tranquillity are important daily aspects of this program.  By bringing this program to our community, residents will have the opportunity to introduce their children to the beauty of our forests and encourage happy healthy children to enjoy and love beauty of outdoors in our own back yard.

Codemobile Event

I would like to thank my friend, Jessica Paz, for collabrating with me to organize a Codemobile event at the Prospect Road Community Centre.
The Coding Workshop which took place July 15thfrom 6:30 to 7:30 for youth ages 7 to 12 provided the opportunity for youth to learn code Dash Robots & Makey Makeys.
Thank you to Jessica and her team for exposing kids to the tech industries.  This event was a huge success and I plan to organize similar events for our youth in the future.

Culinary Arts Course

Sir John A. Macdonald High School has been selected as one of two high schools in Nova Scotia that will be receiving a new fully operational, instructional, commercial kitchen. The course is part of the expansion of the skilled trades centre announced by the provincial government and started in 2018 and gives students a taste and first-hand exposure to the service trades.
There are many types of trades that provide high paying jobs in Nova Scotia, and I'm thankful some of the kids growing up here will have another option for a career choice.  As Nova Scotia continues to grow and diversify it’s important we expand training opportunities that reflect growing industries and expose students to all career paths.
The implementation and continued expansion of specialized programs at the skilled trades centre is essential to the future success of our students and is an important aspect of our educational system that I am committed to supporting.

Recognizing People Who Make a Difference

The hallmark of a strong community comes from the people within the community.
We are fortunate to be surrounded by amazing people who contribute their time, talents, and skills to enhance the quality of our community, who take care of friends and neighbours, who organize fundraisers, who advocate for causes, who care for the environment, who participate in community organizations, who run businesses, who earn academic, athletic, artistic, or musical achievements.

It is a pleasure for me to celebrate and recognize individuals, groups, and organizations in our community by presenting Members Statements and Resolutions in the House of Assembly when the House is sitting.   The readings become an official part of the House of Assembly history and record’s known as Hansard.
If you know of a special person in our riding who makes a positive difference, has won an award, volunteers their time, and contributes to our community, I would love to share your story.  People of all ages are eligible.
